When the zombie apocalypse happens, you'll be glad to have the panels.

I have called every month for the past 13 months informing them that they are not currently charging us for water.
13 Months later I have still not been charged for water use.

I definitely want to go down that route as well. My opinion though - it's not worth generating (at or near) 100% power unless you can sell the excess back to the grid at a reasonable value. To my knowledge (which admittedly is about year dated) that this isn't the case in Alberta.
Still love the notion - perhaps have enough capacity to generate 75% of your needs, and use the evil corporation to supplement the heavy months?

Its a modest little house. My wife is the culprit. She leaves every light on in the house. If was an engineer I would design a light bulb that had mini solar panels around itself so it could generate its own power. I got 2 portable air conditioners a few summers ago because my wife was 8 months pregnant and miserable to live with, cold air fixed that problem.
Its when I got my electricity bill that summer that got me thinking about solar panels. Its about the price of a car.

Why? When it comes to residential power generation, solar panels are pretty non-intrusive. Putting a wind turbine in your backyard is very intrusive. If you're a farmer that's ok, but not if you live in a populated area.

I have a really big back yard and it's always windy. Plus i have like 20 massive trees so i don't get much sun in the yard. I guess i was only thinking of my place when i typed that.

Dont get me started on this fataing company.
They NEVER and i mean EVER send me a bill every month.
Sometimes not even for two months, even after informing them multiple times this is the case.
All they ever do is confirm my address with me, makes me just want to jump through the phone and throttle whoever is asking me that.
Then of course to top it all off, since they havent got payment when a bill actually does arrive three months later its usually accompanied by a disconnect notice.
I..........hate...........that company.

Ahh, Enmax. Just so you know, they're probably reading this thread right now.
My dispute with them is finally resolved after an 8 month battle. My tips: when you're talking with customer service (and inevitably not getting anywhere) tell them you'd like to file a complaint. This should elevate your call to a "supervisor" at least. Though the supervisors never did help me much, they seemed to have a little more power than the front line customer service people.
Next, call or file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and/or the Alberta Utilities Commission (as Boblobla posted previously in this thread).
And the only other thing I'd recommend is write down the name of who you talk to each time, and what action they promise to take on your behalf so that you have a record of it.

And the sad thing is unless you read your meter yourself, keep up with all the fluctuating rates and how they apply to you and do the calculations theres no way to know if you are getting fleeced or not.

It's not the yard size that's an issue so much as the fact that it's a giant eye-sore. For rural homes it might make sense, or acreages, etc. But if you have a neighbour on each fence, erecting a large enough wind turbine to be effective would probably impact their line of sight. Plus I'm not sure how high you can have a structure in your backyard in Calgary. My impression is that efficient/effective wind turbines are fairly large/tall.

I have a problem with Enmax billing too.
Back in August I moved to Okotoks from Calgary. However they kept charging us for the electricity from Sept. to Jan in my old Calgary house.... as well as charging us for my new house in Okotoks..... therefore I've been paying for 2 houses for 4 months.
Well this last bill they straightened it out by some voodoo accounting and instead of ending up with a credit..... I owe over $200! How does that work out!!!
Now in order to get this straightened out I will have to take time off work and go down there and fight with them over my bill.
Simply amazing!!!

When they eventually do send you a bill, divide it by the # of months they took to send it to you, and send them that amount each month

They are idiots. I have had an account with them for 10 years and all of a sudden they stopped billing me. A couple months go by before I notice I had not paid the bill so I call them. They said it would take 3 months to generate a new billing and even then they didnt seem very interested in fixing the problem. It took me 3 phone calls and an email to get them to take some action. So my last payment was January, the next time I get a bill is August. What the H kind of a company do you have to beg to make a payment. Anyway, I continued to pay my account online without a bill and then one day in August I get 8 bills in one day. I continually asked for a supervisor but I think they just handed the phone to the janitor walking by......Morons...

They re-did their entire system last year. Not only has it caused the consumers massive headaches, but also the companies who contract for them (I work for one). I can't even tell you how bad they got screwed with this new system. They basically downgraded their entire system and paid millions of dollars for it. They bought it off Germans and the Germans made out like bandits.
It's been one year since the "upgrade" and Enmax still haven't even come close to figuring it out. Don't expect this to change anytime soon guys. We aren't.

Unless you are trying to make a difference to the environment; it is in my experience that the panels will take a long long time to pay themselves off and aren't really worth it.

8 bills in one day?! LOL If that were me I wouldn't stop laughing. Then I would drive down to Enmax HQ and bitchslap the CEO and just walk out.
