Sounds a little like fruitflies to me. A buddy of mine had em in his place, they were awful. He's a complete slob though.

If you find more appearing in a few days, you may end up needing to dig into the walls. But I believe you should be well equipped for the task.

Its likely carpenter ants that have mated. Once mated they become flying ants.
I would catch a few and have it identified. If carpenter ants its imperative you kill the bastids as they can chew their way through your studs....not to mention drywall and other areas of your home.

Yes, if they are in fact ants (do they have a narrow waist that can be seen under the wings? - pics would be VERY helpful if you can take some) then they are very likely carpenter ants. Carpenter ants don't actually eat wood, but rather chew through it to get to a good nesting place. Carpenter ants would indicate a larger moisture problem (plumbing leak near there?) fix any moisture problems before treating. If they are carpenter ants, and they are emerging from the walls, you already have a fair sized infestation. Call a pro right away, they can take care of it quickly and safely. They can also help you identify them for sure.

Question Another session of... Name That Bug!

I don't mean to resurrect such an old thread, but the topic works for my question.

I'm not sure if anyone can identify this guy for me, as it was found in Northern California. It's just freaky enough that I need to know what it is. Thanks for the help!!

I'm the type of guy who freaks out when I find a spider in my place. I normally get a vacuum cleaner out just for the little ones. I couldn't imagine finding these sort of bugs in my place. One of the few perks of living in Edmonton is having relatively few bugs sharing my home.

one time i tried killing a spider by putting 2 dictionaries on it, and a few other books, sat on it ... took off all the books and it was still crawling away ....

According to statistics, 95% of bugs in Edmonton are head lice.

They go by many names, most call them Potato Bugs, genus Stenopelmatus. They're really crickets, and also closely related to the Wetas of New Zealand.
