I think that we should ban drive-thrus. That way I can leave my car running outside to keep warm while I stand in line for my coffee!
Fotze is totally right...time the traffic lights better and then not having to sit there is clearly a better use for this type of initiative.

My idea has always been to limit the size of the orders using drive-thru's. They were originally designed to make things go faster but a lot of idiots place huge orders and clog up the drive-thru. This is especially true for Tim Horton's, I use the drive-thru if I just want a coffee and maybe a doughnut but my biggest peeve is when some moron ahead of me orders 8 coffee's and numorous items off the menu. The solution to this problem is easy, limit the size of drive-thru orders.

I don't really care - drive thru's places are no longer apart of my diet. This is another example of politicians looking like they are doing something - when in fact it doesn't make much of a difference. Someone already mentioned the lack of drive-thru's in Vancouver and that is true for the most part just in the city of vancouver (lack of space) but when i was at school there - guess what? We all drove to the nearest drive through anyways...by passing 3 Mcdonalds anyway...I am sure that would be the case for alot of people. Why? no where to park was the biggest issue and if you did find a spot it was metered parking - also later at night the Kerrisdale Drive Thru was the only one opened - the other 3 were all closed. Some of the ladies would do it for safety reasons. Overblown most likely...but they felt it was worth the trip.

Enough with the smug attitude and the belief that it's your mission that people should be forced to live your "superior" lifestyle. As oil and gas start to cost more people are already making choices and priorities vis-a-vis, where they live in proximity to where they work, how big a house they want to heat in the winter, etc. It should be their choice to make and not forced upon them in the near term. Reality will force it's hand as Calgary gets more populated, let these things naturally play out instead of trying to convert Calgary into New York City overnight.

Couldnt agree more!
If you hate Drive Thru's, dont use them. Let market forces decide who does and who doesnt build a drive thru. If drive thrus really are so hated, people wont use them and they wont be built.
In this case, it seems the people who are for banning them dont use them anyway. It should be up to the people who use them.
First, I read the herbicide thread, and was a little annoyed. Herbicides are ok when used in moderation and responsibly, but, nope, we gotta ban them! Wont it be fun living in a weed invested crap hole of a city? Yay!
Then, I read this thread, and am angry. I am tired of choices and freedoms being taken away.

As much as it annoys me when I get stuck behind the guy that orders half the menu in the drive thru, last time we discussed drive thrus someone made a very good point about people like mothers on their way home, car full of kids, ordering from the drive thru because whet the heck else can she do? Lock the kids in the car? Unstrap the baby seat and lug it inside?
If anything, it's a bit sad that people can't run inside to grab the one thing they want off the menu. It's a heck of alot easier to carry out one coffee than it is to carry out two trays of coffee and a box of donuts.

Banning drive-throughs makes a lot of sense. Removes those toxins from the air, encourages more eco-friendly commerce, and boosts the appeal to building a street culture. Seriously, how are people really upset over this? I mean, beyond the expected narcissist types....

it would improve communities by making people talk face-to-face instead of through a speaker
No thanks, I have no desire to get-to-know all the Canuck fans working in our fast food joints.

My time is $$, I don't need slower service and the inconvience of going inside. The bigger question is how can anyone think the the ideling at drive throughs actually contributes anything to the total emmission output is beyond me. Why don't we all turn off our cars at traffic lights? That would save 10000X this initiative!

Market forces and facsism in the same thread! Oh my.
If the places that have drive through's can't adapt to the (what is in my opinion, markert forces saying that drive througs aren't wanted, and the municipal government is the arm that would instigate that) then market forces will make those businesses suffer. My guess is Timmies is going to be ok.

Did I not call it?
Anyways, your logic makes no sense. Drive-throughs are not a safety concern. Cars turning their engines off at traffic lights are. The two situations don't compare.

Leaving your car on at a traffic light allows you to move your car right away if need be. I guess if you see someone coming up to your rear super quick, you can hurry and veer into the shoulder before he/she hits you.

I don't know if it's a safety concern, considering how little difference it would make turning your car off at the lights during a 45 minute commute, but smog is not a good thing. Pollution is bad for us.

With technology a lot of the newer engines are not emitting that much exhaust any way. I have been told that engines that meet the tier III emission standards can be left running in an enclosed space while the people in the same enclosed space will be able to safely breath. Sucks if you want to kill yourself, but it makes the argument to eliminate drive thru's all the more unnecessary.
