I think he blocked it too but i've been watching it in SD in slow mo and I can't be 100% sure in that I would overturn the umpire, it's a tough break but you can't fault him on that, at game speed it's impossible.

Maybe MLB needs to go with video replay.

Damn, I was rooting for the Padres -- they looked like the weaker team coming into the playoffs. But this is just an aside -- This will be the first time, ever, that I will actually be paying close attention to the MLB playoffs.

Very very very tough to tell. From all the replays I saw I would say inconclusive. You can't tell if he touched or not. I'd go with what the ump saw since he was standing right there. unreal game though.

It would have been interesting if replay would have overturned the call. Agreed that you can't be 100% sure.

It's hard to have replay in baseball for a sport that has so much leeway.

Strike zones vary from umpire to umpire. There's running up and down the baseline, catcher's interference. During a 4-6-3 double play the shortstop doesn't even have to touch the bag, he just has to be close.

And on Holliday's slide at home, he just has to be close. The umpire sees that Barrett dropped the ball, that's all he needs to go by. If Barrett catches the ball, even if Holliday gets a bigger chunk of the plate, he's probably called out.

So I guess what we can say is that every sport has blown calls, I just find it funny after an NHL game or a CFL game if there is a blown call, how those leagues are considered bush, I have seen just as many stupid calls/rulings in MLB, NBA and NFL as well.

Sorry Jiri I wasnt talking directly to you, more just a comment of how people react on this board to blown calls in the NHL (and I guess CFL).

Where is the overhead angle? I would be shocked if they did not have a high camera to show balls/strikes but I did not see that angle, which would be definitive. With everything riding on one call I think there should be video replay. Can't be for balls and strikes and each team gets one or two per game. If this happened in SD they would still be rioting.

Suprisingly it seems that in SD it's accepted that he's safe. The players are saying he's safe. The manager said, I think he got his hand in.
The San Diego papers are writing more about how great a game it was and killing Hoffman for blowing a 2-run lead. There's very little talk about the final play itself.

TBS does have an HD channel, it's just not available to all cable companies.
I was looking at the front page of the San Diego Tribune and see a picture of a couple of people hugging with tears in their eyes. I'm thinking there was a train derailment or something awful and find out they were crying because the Padres lost. How the hell does a sporting event make your cry? I don't get it.

If those are the only 2 angles they showed i don't see how you guys can be upset, that was entirely inconclusive.

People cried when the Flames lost in '04.
Baseball is emotional. You go to 81 games a year and follow the season every single day. People cry watching soap operas and movies because their favorite character died. Baseball IS a soap opera!

You obviously didn't watch the Flames/Ducks game 7 in 2006. It made me cry. Cause it was so horrible.

I think there should be limited replays in the majors. Not for calling balls and strikes but for moments like this and other specific things. No reason whatsoever not to have replay available - get the calls right.

I believe the NHL is unfairly criticized for its reffing which I think is largely very good.

The CFL though is consistently incompetent. I accept blown calls, what I don't accept is the ongoing pattern of ineptitude the plagues the CFL when it comes to officiating....which includes calls made when the refs didn't seem to even know the actual rules.

The blown HR was 10X worst then the call at home. The Ump was going to call Holliday out if Barrett held onto the ball. All that needs to touch the plate is one tiny part of one finger and hes safe. Anyone who can say they conclusively can tell he did not touch the plate is lying!

I could be wrong but I think that it was actually on Sportsnet HD. I know it was on one of the Shaw HD channels, even though it wasn't listed in the guide thingy. Pretty sure it was SNET.
