He probably never should have been head coach when he was, but he's an experienced coach and I definitely don't mind the hire as an assistant.

Weird hire imo, I’d lol w to know the rationale around this and who the other candidates were… this is the last guy I would have expected.

Must have some sort of familiarity with someone already on Staff.
This would make sense more than anything.

I'd want someone who is also good with younger players ....who says he doesn't take over on the Wranglers ? Maybe something we don't see yet.

Maybe they think he'll be better at taking a knife to a gun fight than Savard.

Probably an easy guy to replace Huska with when he gets the axe as mentioned previously. Cheap and previous head coach experience.

Don’t think they will be spending much on coaching while we rebuild.

I would really like to see this changed in Hockey.

Coaches are always the first to get canned and I think this needs to change, I understand accountability and all but coaching seems to always be the easy way out.

There are probably many benefits to having a coach 5+ years but rarely do coaches ever get there.

I do agree stability is important it’s the easiest and cheapest move to make.

McDavid has been killing a coach every 1.25 years.

I kinda figured something like this. Which is why he couldn't come for the associate tag before they hired Savard last year.

It's fine, I rather they hire the good coaches when we are ready to be competitive. The current group is good filler for the rebuild years, and Huska has experience working with getting players ready for the NHL.

I agree. They have given way too much power to the players. It's easier to replace a coach than it is to replace a player. Too many NMC & NTCs. It really isn't very equal that the players get to stay where they want to for as long as they want to but the majority of coaches can expect to be gone after 2 or 3 years, even if they have a long contract.

Listened to his interview with Pat yesterday. Seems like a good guy but ultimately I was left feeling like he was saying "they needed a coach, and I'm a coach."

Nothing really special about the hire. He mentioned he wasn't sure what his role would be yet.

How do you take a job without knowing what your role will be?

I am sure it was discussed, much like the PP was for Savard last year they just never clarified it until later.

IMO it's short-sighted to disregard coaching during the rebuilding years and simply ask for the budget coach. Yes, you might not need a 'competitive' coach, but we need coaches that can work with and develop our young players. (ie....coach them). Maybe this is the right coaching staff for that, idk, but you can't just say 'let's get a good coach when we're good'

Skills development isn't a linear process that only happens during the years we're competitive, particularly with young players. The things that players are coached on during the rough years are skills they'll use during the good years.

It also may be that Calgary is not at the present moment a great option for high skill coaches. There has been a coaching carousel for a while now before the star players left. If I'm an established coach elsewhere with success (whether in junior, AHL, or NHL), would I want to uproot my family for what could be a difficult season with a poor roster?

It's not like these jobs are readily available either. I would assume he was desperate to take the job, much like Gulutzan was catching flights at 5am and climbing mountains at 7am for the Flames job.

He was a top ranked upcoming coach and then took a job with a terrible team.

Babcock was the greatest coach in the history of mankind until he had a #### Leafs roster and finished dead last. Coaching record always need to be taken with a grain of salt IMO, unless you think GG is the greatest PP coach of all time.

That Leafs team planned that tank, it was part of that plan when Babcock came.

Gross, just defended Babcock.
