This is funny, too:

With McGuire contractually tied to the Whalers, the Senators needed permission to hire him. The Whalers gave it, though McGuire, as part of his duties, will no doubt be asked to prepare scouting reports of the Whalers for the Senators. This while collecting more than $190,000 from the Whalers and $10,000 Canadian from the Senators. Asked why the Whalers would allow McGuire to do that, one insider said they are "not concerned about his scouting reports and opinions."

In fact, if you think about it, Eugene Melnyk and Pierre Dorion are always saying really dumb #### in the media, so you'd actually think they could use someone with decades of broadcasting experience in a media relations role.
I’m not sure Pierre would help in that regard. He says cringe worthy things so often that it’s hard to imagine him as a PR guy.

He probably has pretty in-depth knowledge about young players. But super happy I don’t have to listen to him anymore.

I wonder ESPN offered Pierre a TV contract or not?

I’m not excusing this at all because years back I remember he ended up making a power play and throwing players under the bus and he got burned. But that was the early 90s? Now he’s an older guy and I assume he’s learned his lesson from more or less being blackballed all this time. I can’t hold it against him after so long. I’m also sure he’s not the wolf that most in the nhl are. He’s simply a goof.

Terrible move by the Sens. His arrogance is off the charts.

He drops more names (known and obscure like random US college coaches) to try and sound important, knowledgeable and connected to the past and present, than Ron MacLean does on broadcasts.

His condescending tone, passed off analysis, is an insult most people who watch and understand hockey. His time at TSN would be to make very general and cliched statements on a game (ie the Flames have to get a good forecheck) and then every time the Flames would forecheck, he'd smugly pat himself on the back and remind everyone of what he said. Heaven's forbid the Flames get a goal off a forecheck, but even goals that weren't from the forecheck, he'd do verbal gymnastics to say that the threat of the Flames forecheck caused the goal, to patronizingly sound like some savant.

There's a reason he's tried and tried and failed and failed to get an executive gig this last decade.Cliches such as dropping the term "puck IQ" 50 times isn't going to make a player better. If he was to be a pro scout or something, sure, but not player development, some of his interviews are the more awkward interviews in sports, where he's making sure he's sounding thoughtful and insightful first and foremost.

Pierre comes across as far more goofy and off than arrogant IMO. He tries so hard to sell to the casual fan on TV and yes he likes to drop references all the time. For me that doesn't come across as arrogant at all, it's someone trying way too hard and a little nerdy.

I really don't enjoy him on TV so not upset about this news. Those old stories are a little surprising to me, he honestly just seems like a guy whose people skills aren't what you'd expect. Hard to hold much malice towards the guy.

Other sports like MLB, NBA and NFL have guys going back and forth from coaching/management to the broadcast booth a fair bit.

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. Let me ask you a question.

Will we have to hear Pierre McGuire on hockey broadcasts anymore?

This is a great move for hockey fans!

If you have repeated stories of him being an arrogant dick without question, and you have to guess whether he's A) still actually an arrogant dick or B) now just a goofy guy with poor people skills who comes off like an arrogant dick... I think the most likely answer is A.

People don't change and somehow come off as the same person accidentally. I'd guess he just hasn't actually changed a bit.

Best part of this is never having to mute another broadcast cause he is on it.

Worst hockey commentator I have ever witness.

Just brutally clueless.

Anyone catch his media interviews yesterday? Made his way to name drop endlessly, agreed with everything great about the organization, along with unnecessary "Mr. Melnyk" this and "Mr. Melnyk" that.

He's totally a brownnoser and a know it all. When brownnoser Kyle Bukauskas asked him about some management philosophy he seemed to cream himself explaining some magic philosophy he came up with that the Sens are just "3 players" away or some nonsense. I get he's excited but what the hell is this guys' role? The owner brought him in and he's clearly talking about everything and anything. There's no way he'll last more than two years before he starts annoying people day to day.

Two years? Try two weeks. Guy is the walking talking embodiment of hockey-guy Dunning Kruger.

Guess away. He doesn’t come across as an “arrogant dick” to me.
