Suzuki alone is worth more than 1 year of Pacioretty.
I guess Tatar has negative value?
This reminds of of the Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat trade.
How did that work out for McPhee?

Hard to predict how this one will turn out. I like the deal for the Habs because it seemed unlikely they would re-sign him.
But Vegas is also under pressure to stay competitive and lost Neal. Pacioretty could be a larger contributor if he stays healthy. The trade makes sense for both sides I think.

McPhee gave up too much unless they already agreed on an extension, Suzuki is as dynamic as they come, nobody in the OHL lead his team in scoring like he did. I suspect Tatar isn't as bad as he was last year either.
This trade smells like McPhee's Forsberg trade.

Even a one eyed squirrel can find a nut, Vegas was a nice story in his first year, very similar as his first year in Washington as they made the finals but he was a whole lot of bad for the next 15 years.
Serious question? Has he ever won a trade?

So McPhee turns 2 x firsts (including a high first) and 3 x seconds - pretty much all the picks he gained from all the wheeling and dealing around the expansion draft - into a year of a 29 year old Pacioretty. That's embarassing.

Somehow, despite being on the Candiens, I think he's really an underrated player. He's still on the right side of 30 (for a couple months) and if he bounces back this could look like a really lopsided trade by the Knights. I don't know why people think the Candiens got the better end of this deal.
Suzuki is a strong prospect, but Tatar was a healthy scratch during the Knight's playoff run and a 2nd round pick is peanuts compared to a UFA player like Pacioretty.

I agree with all this with the caveat that Pacioretty needs to re-sign with the Knights for them to get the better value in this trade. Otherwise, that's a lot to give up for 1 year of a player. The impending UFA status of Pacioretty is likely why many think the Canadiens got the better end of the deal.

IMO the Canadiens wouldn't have traded him if he was going to re-sign with them.
So the value they got for 1 year is amazing and this is not getting worse even if he extends with VGK because that does not imply that he would have signed an extension with Montreal.

Meh... I'm not even going to comment on the trade values, but boo....
Vegas greatly improved their scoring this season.

This is good return for Montreal IMO.
Tatar was bad post trade but is a 20-25 goal guy in his own right.
Suzuki has been tearing up the OHL and ranked 30th in the Athletics top 50 prospects. (More value than getting a 1sr for 2019 from Vegas for sure).
2nds always carry some value.
Reminds me a bit of the Duchene trade - Ottawa paid a ton to upgrade Turris to Duchene, Vegas paid a ton to upgrade Tatar to Pacioretty.
Also makes no sense since they were supposedly hesitant to move their top prospects (Glass/Suzuki) for Karlsson.

Based on where they were last season, and where they should be after now trading away several of their best players (patches, galchenyuk) I wonder if the Habs might be low-key trying to move Price next?
They don't look like they're going to be competitive for a few years, and while Price will still be under contract, he'll be 34-35 years old.
I wonder if they could actually get any value for him though, considering his cap hit and NMC.

I think both teams got weaker by making this deal. I honestly don't see a winner and only see a couple of losers. Still trying to figure out why either team would make this deal?

The Habs were going to lose Patches to free agency and this is the best they thought they could do.
The Knights trying to replace Neal’s scoring and leadership.
