He speaks from his heart, he is correct. Seriously I don't mean to stereotype myself but what are the chances of a high-class texan having a prejudice towards colored people, I'd say they are pretty good.

I think nfoitu hit on a key point: no one on either side is all that willing to change things in that area.
While I would agree that West is speaking from the heart, I wonder what he has done to help change things?
Probably as much as he can, he's been known to be very vocal about charitable organizations and donating lots of money, theres not much else he could do.

The American attitude towards race is often fascinating - including and especially the attitudes of black people themselves.
Until people started playing the race card, I honestly had no idea that all of the video CNN, CBC, FOX and everyone else was showing was of predominantley black people who were suffering.
All I saw were people suffering.
I didn't even notice their colour.
|
Exactly. And NOBODY should notice the color.
Well come on now. Really?
I certainly noticed the color of the skin of the vast majority of people in all that footage. You honestly haven't?

I found this on a donation site:
"Thank you for helping the Kanye West Foundation's Loop Dreams. Loop Dreams is an initiative that is committed to keeping musical instruments in schools and providing the opportunity for "at-risk" students to learn how to write and produce music. Your donation will help enroll students in this program and give them an incentive to stay in school."

Devils and Flaming - I was thinking more in terms of race relations. I should have worded that better.
Rouge - I can't speak for DFF, but honestly, I did not notice the skin colour. All I saw were suffering people. Obviously my eyes were seeing black people, but it never occured to me that the fact that the suffering are predominatly black should matter. All that mattered was that people were suffering, and needed help that wasnt coming.
Though obviously the debate over social and racial disparity was inevitible, and obviously it is a serious concern in the south.

What are the chances that a guy in (or soon to be) Dublin Ireland is a drunken, potato eating, scabbed knuckled, red haired, head-bobbing, corner-mouth-talker? I'd say they are pretty good. But I don't mean to stereotype.
Hmmm, pretty stupid statement, huh?

This idiot goes on a telethon for Red Cross and is a bitter piece of shinguard... That's not the place to do that... you think that's going to get people to bust out their wallets?
It's not about black or white, Chris Tucker was flabbergasted... You're a jackass Kanye... here's an idea.. donate 100% of the proceeds of your next album to relief efforts... I'm pretty sure that's help the cause than to spout off some ignorant shinguard like that.

how is it not about black and white?? tell the thousands of black people in New Orleans that were neglected that its not about black and white...
at least Kanye spoke from the heart and didn't follow the telepromtor full of the typical generic crap that everyone else said..
Kanye West's comments will serve to further the discussion on race relations in the USA, which is still obviously a huge issue judging from the last week or so...

Bush is not from Texas.
He just pretends to be for popularity purposes. It is virtually impossible to win the White House running out of the NE USA.
He is as upper-class, prep boy, north-easterner as.... John Kerry!!
Birth place - Bush Sr - Milton, Massachusetts
Birth place - Bush Jr - New Haven, Connecticut
University - Bush Sr - Phillips Academy of Andover (Massachusetts) / Yale
University - Bush Jr - Yale / Harvard
Claeren.
Yeah, he was born in CT and went to school at Yale. Yes, his family is from New England. But the guy grew up in Texas. You think he's faking the accent?

So Kanye thinks the only reason people haven't gotten help is because they're black? That's stupid. Perhaps if they weren't SHOOTING at the people trying to help, they could've gotten help earlier.
If Bush hates blacks so much, why is a black female his National Security Advisor? Why would he put someone he hates in such a powerful position?
Kanye needs to get a grip.
IMO, the only thing funny about that statement was the fact that he couldn't get it out without stuttering. The great Kayne, a lyrical wizard, can't speak eloquently.

I honestly haven't.
I wasn't raised to treat people differently based on physical characterisitics, so I don't really pay attention to whether someone is white or not white. It just doesn't matter to me. Especially when the other things about them are so much more noticeable.....like those folks on TV.

What about the white people that were neglected in New Orleans, Gulfport, Pass Chirstian...etc. Who is their voice? Kanye West doesn't care about white people!
It's was a very ignorant and selfish statement.

Well to be honest, Bush's cabinet has nothing to do with anything concerning this issue. His cabinet is the most ethnically diverse cabinet because he is trying to dispel the notion that something like 77% of the party is white/christian.
Whether or not they are the best people for the job, or if they were picked for their race is an on going debate.
Now that being said, I can say with confidence that even if Bush was a closet card carrying member of the KKK, there is no way in his position he'd want to be labeled a racist. So he'd do everything in his power to stop this, which is what I think he is doing.
If anything, it was pass-poor resource management by himself, rumors that the Fema requested 50 mil funding and they didn't get it, and the national guard troops overseas.

no doubt there were white people caught up in it as well...but look at the percentages of black to white who couldn't get out due to poverty (looking at New Orleans particularly)...and can you honestly tell me that if thousands of white folks were stuck in New Orleans the response would be as shinguardty as it was?? honestly??

Of course he's going to be bitter Jordon. Who isn't? I am and I'm a white guy living in Canada and I am sickened by the situation.
But that's a good point about "is that going to make people bust out their wallets". What he said was definitely counterproductive and no doubt cost a few bucks in donations. The idea is to raise money and he lost a lot, I'll bet, by saying that. Half the (voting) country voted for Bush, and they have a lot of money. Trying to get money out of people and insulting them at the same time probably doesn't work.
There is a time and a place and Kanye was wrong on both the time and the place.

Clinton must have done the same thing eh? After all, he's a true southern whitey. He must have had his token black 'servants' so people wouldn't think he was a racist. That's what I think he did.

You're right. Since FEMA had a list of exactly who was trapped in New Orleans and other places affected and found out that most of them were black, they decided to take a day off 'cause they were tired from all their hard nosed cop work. If only a few more white folks were on the list! The response would've been instantaneous!

You make like ALL the National Guard troops were over seas. They now have 15000 troops in Louisiana, and are going to double that in the next couple days. They didn't just pack up and come home that quickly.
Also, regardless of 'not wanting to be considered a racist,' the National Security Advisor is a very powerful position. If you want to 'appear' to be diverse, make a black person the head of health care or some other such useless function in the US. You wouldn't make a black person one of the people you are going to rely on the most in your years in office, because that's the US's biggest issue right now. Homeland Security.
pass poor resource management aside, I thought that the FEMA was changed to assist in terrorist attacks? So in essence, he was denying security against them, wasn't he? Or is that a lie, and he was really denying disaster relief? Make up your minds! Was it turned into a department for relief of terrorist attacks, or wasn't it? And if it was, as everything seems to accept here, how is denying them 50 million helping natural disaster relief?

they don't have to have a list to know that most people who couldn't get out were poor black people...
