When I was in High School I worked at the Pet Store in SouthCentre. We had a small octopus in a tank beside some other tanks with marine fish. We had it for a few weeks with no issues. One morning I came into work and the sliding lid on two of the aquariums were open and the octopus was in the tank next door. We thought there was no way that the octopus slid open it's lid, crawled over to the other tank, opened the lid and went into the other aquarium with the fish. We moved the little bugger back home and, sure enough, the next morning we found it in the next tank over again. I assume it was going into that tank to eat the fish (which it didn't as far as I know) but I don't really know for sure why it moved next door. We ended up putting a locking mechanism on the lid of it's aquarium and it didn't escape anymore. A part of me was a little disappointed that it couldn't have it's nightly adventures anymore.
Also, is "rugby ball sized" a standard measurement in New Zealand?
As much as we would measure something as the size of a hockey puck, big as a bread box, golf ball sized hail, dime sized drops, and other coin sized comparisons.
The standard pluralized form of octopus is "octopuses" although the Ancient Greek plural "octopodes" has also been used historically. The alternative plural "octopi" — which misguidedly assumes it is a Latin "us" word - is considered grammatically incorrect. It is nevertheless used enough to make it notable.

My uncle told me a story how he was at a beach once in the old country in about knee deep water. Out of nowhere, a tiny little octopus wraps a tentacle around his ankle and my uncle thought the little guy was cute. Next thing he knows, the little guy starts tugging on him, trying to pull him under, and my uncle was shocked at the power the little thing had.
He said he was never in danger of drowning, but absolutely could not believe the pulling power of a tiny, cute little octopus.
For the record, I like how they taste, but they have to be chopped up on my plate so they are unrecognizable. If it's still in the shape of an octopus, I can't eat it.

Ugh, for me it's the texture. Just can't do it, generally.
Although I had octopus ceviche in Chile once and that was probably the best ceviche I've ever had.
