You bring up excellent points regarding what to look for when choosing a CrossFit gym. You can open a "Box" with nothing more than a Level 1 certification, which consists of $1000 and a weekend of classes. Granted, you have to display a working knowledge of common movements, as well as pass a written exam. Affiliation and authorization to use the CrossFit name is a bit more difficult.
There are certainly trainers at my gym that I trust more than others, but in the end, the gym is a reflection of the owner. If the owner isn't concerned with proper form, the trainers won't be, either. I'd recommend trying out a few different boxes, I'm sure there are a million in NYC.
I will have to disagree about the culture, though. Last week, a participant with a top 5 score in the Open workout disqualified for not adhering to movement standards. The gym that judged the workout was also banned from judging any more Open workouts this year. This came about from outcry within the community.
Anyway, I'm not here to recruit people. It works for me, and it makes me better at my job. If people are interested, do some research, and check out a gym for yourself. If you're not comfortable, check out another. If you're not interested, cool. It's not for everybody.

LOL, I will never do crossfit, because then that would make me a crossfitter.
I would be OK with it, if you crossfit a-holes didn't pull every weight off the rack, hog half the equipment for 30 minutes at a time, do wind sprints in the weightroom, and generally be 'that guy' at the gym.
I have considered cancelling my membership, and changing gyms because of you dinks ruining it for everyone else. I know a bunch of people already have. Crossfitters are narcissist d-bags that think the gym was built for them, and nobody else.
If you are a crossfitter, go injure you back doing horrible awkward pull-ups at a cross fit gym.

In essence, I agree with Pylon. A "regular" gym isn't really a good place to be attempting CrossFit workouts. The programming is all wrong for a place where space is limited, and equipment is shared. 30 minutes of going between a barbell/pull up bar/rower, etc. would be a pain in the ass for everybody else.
Not sure why the pull up thing is such a hangup for people. The military has been doing kipping pull ups for ages. Some workouts call for strict chest to bar pull ups, some call for getting your chin over the bar however you can. In those instances, kipping is more effective, simple as that.

At the Crossfit Box I go to you have to take a basics class for a month 3x a week before you can go on to the normal paced class. If they think you should spend more time in the basics class than you still cannot proceed to the advanced class. The basics class goes over mobility, weights and proper technique. You spend alot of time going over proper lifting techniques (with no weight or light weight as necessary). As far as trainers go some are better than others. I find that the less experienced ones usually work with the kids groups and they go over more stretching and skipping etc.

Correct. Both riveting spectator events.
I can't wait until The Wall Pushup Network comes to the Shaw lineup.

Who said anything about watching other people exercise?
The purpose of the Open is to track your own progress, as well as seeing where you rate among other people with similar goals doing the exact same workouts.

My mistake. I thought this was the circuit where they set up a bunch of equipment in Eau Claire and you watch people do crunches. Back to your regularly scheduled exercise competition.

"How do I know you will hurt? I am a CrossFitter and affiliate owner, and, like a bad ex-girlfriend, CrossFit hurt me. I have a tear in each patellar tendon to prove it"
WTF why would i want to injure myself??
"The guy who never told her that training is like a coin. One side is result; one is risk. You can’t have one without the other."
So your saying there is a 50/50 chance that i get injured? Sounds great

Did you bother to read the rebuttal.
I've personally never seen a fitness program where you can't get injured. As has been stated here repeatedly, it isn't for everyone. If you look for reasons not to do it, you'll find them.

I'm looking forward to the C&J, I have a lot of trouble with T2B, so I may have to scale those.

Well, since I suck at pull ups, my "official" score will likely be under 20. I'll scale and keep going for as long as I'm able to.

I've never done a Burpee - is there any benefit to adding it to a work out program when you're already doing squats, deadlifts, bench, press, rows, pullups and dips?
It seems like a decent free body exercise to do when you aren't able to go to the gym.

Definitely good for that. I also like to use them as a way to get a little sweat going and my body moving when I get to the gym.

32 (1 round + 2 thrusters). I did as many chest to bar pull ups as I could, then switched to jumping pull ups just to keep a rhythm going.
I'm glad I completed the workouts. I regret not actually signing up for the Open so I could get a ranking. I'm looking forward to go back in a year and see how far I'll have come in my fitness level from today til then.
I know we have at least one woman going to Regionals, and it's possible that we'll have a team making it in the team competition. Our box owner won the NW Regional last year, but he didn't do so well this year. Not sure he's even making it to Regionals unless they have a past winners exemption. I guess we'll see when the results are finalized next week!
