Well not that I am a huge animal rights person but that was pretty bad. I am surprised that they wouldn't have done anything along the lines of poisoning the pigs and then doing a mass grave. I wouldn't think it would take to long to throw in a large batch of rat poison into the feed troughs and wait for a day, have mass graves, a lot of fuel and burn the pigs.

Shooting the pigs would be unreasonable to expect to do, the logistics of that would be a nightmare when you consider the numbers of pigs. There really aren't any "humane" ways to to kill a large number of animals though.

Mass slaughters are not that rare, unfortunately. But yeah, usually the animals are killed before burial. There is really no excuse except being really really cheap.

I'm always interested at the reaction to these types of things vs. the inhumane treatment of a single dog. I get that our society is very close with dogs, but can you imagine making a joke in the thread about the guy killing the sled dogs?

I'm not calling anybody out for making a joke...I have as dark a humour as anybody. Just commenting on the vast difference between how we view different animals.

Why not gas them? Chlorine is heavier than air, get them in the pit and gas them first. Not the most comfortable way to go but a hell of a lot better than being buried alive I'm sure.

i think one of the big things is that pigs are pretty darn heavy. it would take a little more work to kill them first, deal with the mess, then move them and bury them (or whatever method they use to dispose).

Seriously, sometimes people don't get such humane executions. Not to mention the cost involved.

If any of you guys had a choice of paying for a mass gassing or paying the peanuts it costs to dig up a hole to kill a bunch of pigs........not sure how many people would be so eager to pony up the dough.

Pig screams are scary. I have a friend who used to work on a farm, and he said when you hear the pig squeel long enough, it starts to sound like they're calling your name.

I spent some time on a pig farm too and thought the same thing. I thought I was the only one.

I can understand where the South Koreans are coming from on this. The diseases involved are pretty dangerous and can be contracted very easily. However, I honestly wonder if there's a way that the method of killing cows can be used (fair enough that it'd be heavily inefficient because it would be killing the pigs individually...but...)

Obviously they should have been put down in a humane way, but animal welfare in many parts of the world is far less than in Canada and the USA.

Another thing to consider is timeliness. While 3 million sounds like a lot, the reality is that this only accounted for 20% of their total stock. To delay killing the contaminated stock by using a more humane practice would have run the risk of exposing even more of the stock to disease. Killing each one with a bullet or knife would not only take considerably longer, but now you have the issue of cleaning up a highly contagious mess. To the person who suggested simply releasing massive amounts of chlorine gas into an open pit... dude...

It would be interesting if anyone here knows of a more humane yet equally effective method to exterminate such a large stock like that.

Even if they didnt want to shoot are slaughter them, they could have drown them or something to take away the agony of being buried under thousands of pounds of other pigs unable to move for hours, suffocating to death slowly as their lungs got compressed from the weight.

This is pretty much on par with the horrible types of things that happen to animals here in Canada or anywhere else in the world for that matter, just on a much larger scale.

I'm not gonna say I don't care or that I'm not sickened by this, because I am, but this really isn't a "woah" moment. It's just another horrible thing we do to our livestock that goes largely unnoticed.
