Caught the end of Weegar's spot. One of the better and most well spoken NHL players I've ever heard. If nothing else he's clearly a very positive person and a great communicator. Comes across very authentic and not cookie cutter. So clearly he has the gift of the gab, but he sounds pumped to be here, pumped to play in a Canadian market, pumped to play for Sutter.

Communication is only one aspect, but based on that seems like a natural leader.

Huberdeau (starts 90 seconds in): https://www.sportsnet.ca/960/big-sho...s-justin-dunk/

- Mentioned that he talked to Lucic on the phone for a bit.
- I liked that he talked about how much playing on the penalty kill did for his game. That reminded me of how the best Sutter-coached teams leaned on their best forwards like Iginla on the PK.
- Wants to be a leader on the Flames, on and off the ice.
- Will probably check out Calgary in August. Thinks it is a beautiful city.
- Likes 91 and 10 for jersey numbers but hasn't made a decision yet.

Sounded a lot more comfortable in this interview.

Weegar has also had to play in a ton of places, in a few different leagues: Halifax, San Antonio, Cincinnati, Portland, Springfield. That kind of career smartens a player up I imagine.

I suspect he will be significantly better than our last (and only) #91 if he picks that number.

Gary Roberts is the best #10 Calgary has ever had up to this point. Suspect that if Hubdredeau signs longterm he will supplant Gary as the best #10 if he picks that number.

I was thinking 10 is a better number because it can represent any number over 1 if you switch bases.

I didn't realize he played so much PK last season. Not a bad thing at all.

Him being from province of Quebec hope he goes with 10 and honours the greatest to ever wear 10, Guy.

This way we still get to associate a Johnny with a Guy!

It’s only 20 min from Airdrie.

I guess it’s kind of a matter of taste and preference but IMO it’s not all that different in regards to proximity to “fun” American cities.
I think for Canadian players like Huberdeau and Weegar, the ability to quickly and easily get home is an advantage more so than “we’re close to American tourist traps”.

Specifically in Calgary, we may not have great weather, but our division has California, Vegas, and Seattle/Vancouver - there’s lots of time to party on the road, if that’s what you’re after.

There’s lots of time to party here, too, but by that same token, these are 28 and 29 year old men. If they need to be out bumping and grinding at the club every off night, they have a drinking problem.

Beyond that, there’s an entire off-season to go on holiday; the Flames are about to pay these two somewhere between $130-$140M combined.

Weegar was probably more prepared to move on than Huberdeau.

His name has come up in rumors earlier this summer and there was already a lot of speculation that the Panthers wouldn't be able to fit Weegar's next contract into their cap structure for next season.

I can't see any scenario where the team will be sellers this season so August is the time to dig in and get these guys signed before the stakes get too high. The Flames simply cannot risk going into another season with high profile UFA players that might decide they want to move on for nothing.

Yeah his name had been connected to Ottawa, and Vancouver IIRC.

For Huberdeau I hadn't seen a single rumour with his name, and has he said he had been in extension discussions with no indication of a trade.

So I could see why he'd be completely blindsided.
