Not sure why this is such a shocker to a couple of you. He's the biggest name on the market and there's very legitimate speculation he will be traded.

There's a big difference between "Stamkos might get traded" discussion and "What if the Flames get Stamkos" discussion , however. The latter is a horse that has been beaten to death already.

Except this is a Calgary Flames forum in a thread about trade speculation.

I'm not partial to the topic either, but a couple people seem flabbergasted it's being discussed here when this is exactly the time and place where such discussion would take place.

There isn't much out there for trade rumours right now, and talk like this distracts from the dismal play of the team right now.

All I'm saying is there's no need to call Ripley's.

FWIW, Dreger said today that the Oilers may be willing to give up RNH if the price is right.

Which will no doubt lead to endless RNH for Seth Jones proposals from up North.

Get used to it. Trades during the regular season have become a thing of the past in the NHL. We'll see a handful of trades at the NHL deadline - not anywhere near enough to justify the hype - and then a few more at the draft. That's just reality in a league where everyone is tight up against the cap or their internal budget.

So fans who get excited by trades are going to have to resign themselves to the fact that going forward these threads are going to 95 baseless speculation and 5 per cent regurgitating the same rumour (Hamonic!) over and over again.

I think playing in Edmonton has slightly devalued him but there is no way I would trade Jones straight across for the tenderness. Oilers would have to add at the very least a 2nd round pick or more to the deal as you don't trade a future top pairing defenseman for a present/future 2nd line center.

Of all their "building something special up there core" (excluding McDavid), he's the one I would not want put on the market if I was an Oilers fan (which I'm not).

Friedman's 30 thoughts:

Quote:
Winnipeg’s Dustin Byfuglien-Travis Hamonic attempt doesn’t necessarily mean Byfuglien is “on the block.”

The number one thing to remember here is we don’t know the exact timing. Hamonic’s request was made months before it was reported. It’s unlikely such an offer came last week, for example.

Walk it through: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff prefers not to trade Tyler Myers or Jacob Trouba. He probably guesses New York counterpart Garth Snow isn’t taking Byfuglien (a pending free agent) for Hamonic. But you try anyway. And, who knows what else may have been part of this deal, if anything.
Quote:
Wouldn’t be surprised if Edmonton, the Islanders and St. Louis talked to see if there was a three-way match. Not sure how far it went, but it sounds like the window’s closed.
Quote:
Not positive Columbus is 100 per cent going to trade Ryan Johansen. I do think GM Jarmo Kekalainen is testing his value.

Don’t be surprised to see several teams make multiple trips to Ohio —or elsewhere — specifically to watch him. Plenty of homework will be done here.

Number one centres are hard to find and rarely become available. My sense is this isn’t about the last negotiation; you have to put that behind you. But it is about the next one. He’s going to get paid, big. The question is: who will do it?

RNH is a solid 2 way centre with a contract a lot of teams would take on I think. He is only 22 so I could see plenty of interest. The Canucks would be a team I could see but outside of Tanev+ not sure what they can offer.

Would the Leafs give up Rielly? There is a potential match there. As sureloss stated Seth Jones is likely a target for the oilers and in all honesty should be their number 1 choice even if they have to add. A potential Nurse-Jones pairing is scary

Am I the only one that believes that Hall and Eberle should be moved out of Edmonton, if they actually want to install a winning culture change? Aside from the possible return, the addition by subtraction could save that franchise.

A core of RNH, Yakupov, Draisaitl, McDavid and Nurse might actually worry me.
Imagine trading Hall for Harmonic and Collberg (please don't start the NYI wants a D thing) and Eberle for Tokarski and Devante Smith-Pelley (I know the money doesn't work). Or some equivalent. Add picks as needed.

All of the sudden, team balance and 4 defensively responsible players. Edmonton giving up the better players for glaring team needs, has a lot of buying power.

I'm happy that they consistently do WTF moves instead.

Another team that needs a defenceman:

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Hearing surgery coming for LA D Matt Greene. Long-term injury. Big loss on ice and in room

Do you have any idea on the kings thoughts with Schultz? Strange the guy either plays 20mins or is sent down.

Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
McKenzie: “I think there's going to be more tough love” from McLellan, #Oilers specifically w/ RNH, Eberle. 1/3

Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
McKenzie thinks #Oilers are probably open to dealing RNH, Eberle, but doesn’t think there’s anything imminent or front-burner. 2/3

Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
McKenzie: Even if #Oilers don’t trade RNH, Eberle, maybe merely calling them out in transparent way will wake them up. 3/3

Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
McKenzie: Garth Snow is not about to make a deal for Trouba, then have to sign him for more than Hamonic on an extension. #Isles #NHLJets

Maybe they are just not as good as most like to think they are, and there is nothing anyone can "do" to "wake them up" or make them any better.

Insider trading:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/insider-...hopkins~760981

if Oilers need to include RNH or Eberle in trade talks to get a top 4 d-man or more size up front they will consider it
no specific time line for Chiarelli - may linger to draft
LeBrun: RNH and Eberle represent the failed rebuild era. moving them via trade will be a symbolic cutting of the cord and help establish a new culture

Price for Hamonic very particular
pressure for Islanders to make playoffs this season so Snow can't make a deal for picks or prospects
names being heard: Tyson Barrie from Avs, Oscar Klefblom from Oilers, Jonas Brodin from Wild... players who can play just as hard as hamonic
Trouba would be a great fit but little interest in Jets trading him

Jets face a dilemma with Trouba not knowing what his next contract is going to be

Nah. They'll just draft a centre.

As long as the Oilers never trade Yakupov or Hall I'll be happy as their failure is guaranteed long-term.

Taylor Hall represents the failed rebuild so much more than Eberle or Nugent-Hopkins.
