Calgary's never getting an MLS team until it can prove it can support lower levels of soccer. Montreal and Vancouver both had A-League teams before MLS, Toronto didn't, but it's Toronto and has more people and more people who like soccer (i.e. immigrants). Calgary isn't just going to get a team because it has a building for it.

The Stampede is a country music festival.
What about Olympic bid?

I've got to think that CSL would be the short-term goal if MLS is the long-term one.

"Hey, you know that huge country culture that is based on the east side of downtown?"
"Yeah?"
"Well, it would be perfect if we scooped a portion of the available music acts and held a music festival on the west side of downtown!"

That is for a city twice the size. Whatever the new arena is will host the bulk of concerts.
You want to build the thing to attract CFL and soccer crowds if you want to make money.
|
Yeah but that stadium seats 60k which doesn't make sense for 98% of concerts. A 35K stadium could easily host concerts in the range of 15-25k and not have to compete with the arena scheduling in the winter. Scheduling in the winter is half the battle alone as a concert in the Saddledome in the winter has to fit between the Flames, Hitmen, Roughnecks, etc can be difficult to match with band tour schedules. In the winter this stadium would be pretty open for events.

Yah the best part of concerts during stampede is being able to walk the grounds before/after.

The prohibitive factors are the timing of the NFL draft and CFL draft, and CFL rookie camp and training camp.
As far as I know the current CFL schedule is not based on avoiding other sports TV match-ups (besides obvious avoidance of the NFL on Monday, Thursday and Sunday).

lol. And we're back to discussing the fantasy of Calgary getting into MLS for what - the third or fourth time - in this thread?

I figure once the flames hand over anything to the city it will be next to impossible to maintain the secrecy. We need a city employee to go mission impossible and snap some pictures.

MLS has a very low chance of coming to Calgary as it stands today. Anyone who wants MLS in Calgary down the road better get their asses over to Hellard and support Calgary Foothills this summer, show them that pro soccer can survive here...

No, we've never had an MLS team. The Calgary Mustangs were an A-League (the league eventually became the NASL / USL) team that drew a few hundred people in McMahon. Prior to joining the A-League they were one of the highest drawing clubs in PDL in 2001.

I think there is a chance to have an NASL team and a steady 5,000 followers to start. I wonder where those 20k+ attendance who once supported the Boomers have gone.
It is all about marketing.
And it is all about the passion at the grassroots. Foothills PDL is a good start.

I think you can make MLS work. Calgary continues to grow, and it's not just from Canadian transplants. Immigrants from other countries are nuts for soccer. Basically every country in the world except for Canada is nuts over soccer.
Maybe not right now, but in 5 to 10 years or so when Calgary finally has the new arena/stadium/entertainment district (al a Seattle, Glendale, LA Live) you could very easily get an MLS team and get 15 to 20k fans based on the fact that you have a shiny new stadium and an increased immigrant fan base.
Man I really hope the Flames and the City do this right and create an entertainment district with the arena/stadium that is the envy of the biggest cities in North America.
