I can’t see both sides of the Tkachuk effort on goal 2. Flames would be well served to focus on what they can control.

Honest question, do folks propel themselves forward when they are skating by having the skate go in front of them? Did I teach my three year old the wrong way to skate this winter? Cause I think for there to be some reason for his skate to be in front of him and not be considered a kicking motion the ref would have to assume there was some utilitarian reason for the skate to be there.

Here lies the problem.
As evidenced by this thread, people have interpreted this to be a kick with backswing (which seems to be how it's usually enforced).

But the rule doesn't say that and there are many styles of kicks that don't need any backswing. This has somehow because an NHL definition of "kicking motion" that's not accurate at all.
