All the comments on Draistl's bad contract will have to be expunged from the record.

It's a free spin of the roulette wheel... if Carolina can't match the signing bonus, they get a great player at a steal... if Montreal went much, much higher on the AAV, sure, it makes it more likely they get the player, buts there's the risk they overpay for the player, and they end up 'losing' in the long run.
This is a no-brainer for the Habs. They had some intel that the CAR owner might have a challenge in coughing up the signing bonus, so they took a shot... nothing to lose.

Wrong owner, and I think the total bonus is about what was offered to fedorov.
I think Sakic had a ginormous bonus contract as well.
I think Walt had a problem with St. Louis at the time and sat out part of the season to renegotiate his contract.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
although better with the cap in place.
Still waiting for the Bobby Holik contract.
The other thing brought up is that the contract is 5 years, so if at the end of the contract, Aho could be in line for another big payday especially as a ufa.
This contract only buys 1 year of UFA status. Would have been more friendly to the team if the contract was longer as this ends at the 27 year year old season.

This gives me hope that Tkachuks contract could start with a 7.

Can Carolina match the offer than trade Aho? Assuming they can and may get a better return than the picks (assuming the pay structure is enough to cause a trade).

No, if they match they can't trade him for a year.

Not for a year, in which time he'll have already been paid over $21M in signing bonuses.

One scenario that could theoretically happen is that the Habs and Canes negotiate a trade for not matching.
Consider, Player A and Prospect B from the Habs known as Trade Package 1.
Canes don't match get the Habs 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and Habs get Aho. Canes then trade the picks back to the Habs for Trade Package 1.
In effect the Canes trade Aho for Player A and Prospect B in that hypothetical scenario and perhaps getting more value than just a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

I think Carolina will wait till the last minute then match which should prevent Montreal from offer sheeting anyone else I believe?

This is an interesting possibility. Right now, the compensation for Carolina is a bit of a joke. The Islanders received more when they traded Hamonic.
You could see Carolina being enticed here if the cash flow considerations of the deal offered give them pause.

Well assuming all the RFAs sign in a week then sure they won’t be able to offer sheet anyone.

Just talked to Tom Dundon. Says Canes will match the Aho offer. Announcement should come soon. Says Canes "love the player.

So if the Canes match... do the Habs offer sheet Point next? Same agent as Aho.
I think Point probably wants to stay in Tampa (why wouldn't you)... With the rumblings Marner wants out of Toronto maybe he becomes a target?
They'd have to up the offer for either though.

If they love him so much why didn't they just pony up the reasonable 8.4M?

Forgive my lack of RFA knowledge but...I assume the player has no say here? Like, what if Carolina matches but Aho still wanted to play for the Habs? If Canes match he has no choice but to re-sign with the Canes?

Why haven’t the Flames signed Tkachuk yet, the Leafs signed Marner , TB signed Point, etc?

Only if he is willing to sign it....so again unless the Lightning are cash strapped, the offer will have to be much bigger.
Same with Marner.
I think there may be something to the Point possibility though...they are in a big crunch cap space wise as well as they have 3 RFA guys with arb rights.
