Ya that would be one way for Conroy to get around his retention spot issue.

I am not sure I will buy the "only one player". There is always a team on the last day that comes knocking about some depth pieces, or loses out on something, and circles back. We will just have to see it play out, that's all.

As long as the Flames don't retain think it's fine.
Everything I can find says it's 75 days between retention for double retention but I don't see any limitations on it if the Flames don't retain.

Oh I see what you're saying.
I think the price would be way too much and would significantly water down the return for us, at which point it would be better for us just to wait until the summer.
Using Coleman as an example, would any team be willing to retain 2 years at 2.25M for a 2nd?
If they are, would a team like Tampa be willing to trade O'Reilly and a 2nd for Coleman?
In that example, the 2nd cancel and the Flames get O'Reilly for Coleman. Is that worth it? I might just want to wait until the summer and get the 2nd myself.
Retention on Kadri would be even more difficult.

right - so take on some bad expiring money to acquire picks if necessary so that you can pay a 3rd team to retain on Coleman.
Get creative Conny - won't even hit Murray in the wallet. Mid round pick for some retention is a worthwhile cost to maximize the return on Coleman/Kadri.

I do wonder about everyone saying this is a buyers market. But then the trades today pointed to the opposite. Weird.

The pieces moved today didn’t command big prices
If teams don’t want to give up higher end assets they can shop for lesser players

you could argue those were still overpays relative to the quality of the players moved. 2nd for a bottom sixer, 3rd for a fourth liner. But point taken, teams may not be able to stomach the cost. I still think there's chances for someone to do something stupid. Maybe it will be a Hertl like buzzer beating deal where teams don't have the chance to respond. Still injuries that could happen as well, O'Reilly took a high stick tonight. Or someone loses a Stone like player in the next couple of days. Countdown is on, but sounds like it is very fluid.

Are you setting yourself up for later so that you can rip on Conroy for not meeting your wishes?

Whatever that team received for retaining we would know that is what the Flames could have received if they still had that slot available (assuming they use it on Kadri). In that scenario, Flames are essentially giving up an asset.
I don't much care for that scenario, would rather take back a contract.
I get the sense that if Flames were intent on dealing both Kadri and Coleman, they would have been extremely reluctant to retain on Rasmus.

Those were pretty huge prices relative to the quality of the players
We haven't seen the big guys move yet

I agree with this take.
If the Flames really wanted to move both then I think they'd find a way.
Still feels to me like the Flames are actually a bit reluctant to move these two at the same time and would rather move one now and one later

I think they were reluctant to retain on Andersson. But Vegas needed every dollar of retention to take on his contract, even with Whitecloud going the other way. When Andersson refused to extend with Boston (or anyone else), I think that upset the whole plan about the retention slots.

Would prefer if the Flames did not bring on guys with bad attitudes like Laine and Nichuschkin. If they take on.bad contracts give me slow broken down vetran D men or 4th line role players. Not divas.

I agree with one caveat.
I think flames management just values them more then the markets willing to pay.
The flames have a price they'd move them and the market has a price theyre willing to pay and there are sizable gaps between the two.
If someone offered the equivalent of the Nelson deal for him, I think the flames jump on it.
If someones offering a late 1st + cap dump for a heavily retained Kadri then thats probably a tough sell to Murray.

Weren't both of those in 2024? More red flags than a CCP convention, but why hold him for more than a year then decide to pull the plug?

best deals are usually at the deadline
Avs/Islanders
Bruins/Leafs
These were the homeruns for sellers last year, both at the deadline
