With his playoff pedigree and his contract he should be really sought after by a lot of teams looking to take a step in the playoffs.

If Whitecloud draws that kind of return and Conroy pulls the trigger the return for Rasmus would amount to:
Two firsts
A second
Wiebe
Additional asset from the Whitecloud trade
That’s top tier asset management, clearly above what was anticipated as a return on this site.
Oh yeah, if Vegas wins the cup this year (boo) that second would become a third number one. Think ownership got it right when they promoted Conroy.

Does Rhett44 get a victory lap for calling what the team should do?

Considering that he also called out the team because they would never do it… I'd say no.

We are pretty much just outside that coveted wc3 spot.

I was pretty convinced we were looking at a pretty aggressive deadline with a blueliner or two and a depth forward on the way out in addition to some of the names everyone is talking about, but the Thomas news today has me wondering now if mgmt is going to lean into a bit of a teardown short term or try to retool right away. Hoping they are just kicking tires on Thomas for now.
Always amazes me when the flames are in this spot how a stretch run of 20-30 games will echo for the next decade. Difference between picking a real top pick or sliding back is so immense.

Personally, I'd be weirded out if a player like Robert Thomas was available and our team wasn't at least sniffing around on that. Thomas ain't a 35 year old centre, he's 26 and one of the top players in the game. I'd expect 31 other teams inquiring if that rumour has any legs.

I am only okay with it if he’s available in the summer. He’s good enough to stop us from getting a top pick.

Calgary should not even think about giving up the required assets to outbid 31 other teams to win some Thomas sweepstakes.

Exactly, It's possible we may have we already drafted our own Thomas in Reschny and hopefully Gridin can fill the net for him much like Kyrou has for Thomas.
Stay the course.

It would be so stupid at this stage in our rebuild. Like others have said, our most valuable picks over the next 2 - 3 years are going to be our own firsts.
The last thing they should be doing is spending huge capital (and it would be massive) to outbid every team interested in Thomas, only to have him likely help us move out of the basement, but not into a playoff spot the next three seasons while we're praying a top 5 pick or two turns into elite franchise players that you need to win a cup, and then have him in his 30's when the team starts to become a playoff team again.
That would be fundamentally stupid. Just stay the damn course while we're being patient and doing things right for once.

Robert Thomas is a heck of a young player. He is exactly the type of center the flames should go after if they were another 1-2 years into their drafting/development phase.
Now if the flames could trade off Coleman and Kadri. And through those assets pick him up. Might be ok.
I think if flames trade those guys and get a Thomas back by using whatever they get for those assets - I don't think a Thomas gets the flames out of bottom 5 this year or next. Just don't trade the flames actual picks.

Thomas is the type of player you try and go after next season in the off-season.. not right now imo.
Lets get 2 high picks.. we have a great group of young depth players coming up.. then you start filling up the roster for the 2027-28 season.

Once the Flames trade Kadri and Coleman for picks, those picks are the Flames picks.
Not sure why it makes any difference what picks are traded, other than the hoped for top 5 picks of course.
In any event, the winner of the Thomas sweepstakes will need to pay some current assets, whether elite prospects or current young NHL players, to outbid other teams. I expect Parekh would be the starting point, assuming the Blues believed in him.

Thomas is good but not elite. This is way to early in the rebuild to chase a player like that. The Flames don't even have a core yet.

If you think about it, the Flames and the Blues are in a similar situation, so it would be weird for the Blues to trade Thomas, while we acquire him.
Thomas is in his prime now, so I think you make this move with the intention of being competitive

I feel as though we want to lose a few games by trading Kadri, Colman, Whitecloud, etc. Bringing in Thomas will balance that out. If they want to be drafting top three it wouldn't make sense to add yet.
