Fighting now a days is nothing like it was back in our day.
I’d be very hesitant to throw any punches, not just from fear of injury or possible lawsuits/jail time but from my experience nobody fights fair anymore and almost always weapons get thrown into the mix which results in more dire consequence.

This exact scenario happened to a buddy of mine where he stepped up to defend his wife from comments at a bar/restaurant and after throwing the first punch he was jumped from behind and stabbed multiple times.

Almost lost his ability to walk.

Just stupid all around.

So I’m firmly in the walk away category, though my inside voice definitely tells me FAFO to defend one’s loved ones.

There's not much upside in throwing the first punch, but there's plenty of downside.
While I don't necessarily see what he did as a major red flag (provided the guy was actually trash-talking), I agree that it was incredibly dumb. I appreciate that he's still a kid and his brain isn't fully developed yet, but all it takes is an awkward fall after the punch and two lives could be over for no reason.

A friend of mine got in a bar fight years ago and punched a guy who then fell backward, hit his head and died. There just aren't a lot of good reasons to take that chance.

I got suckered punch walking home from work in downtown Victoria late at night. Broke my jaw in 2 places. I didn't see it coming.

It really isn't.

Do people get riled up and get in someone's face if they make an insulting comment? Yes, sometimes. Might even go at them in and give them a shove, make some threats. And it might escalate from there into a tussle (though usually it doesn't).

Is a typical response to immediately punch the person in the face with full force? Nope. Because A) most people don't have hair-trigger tempers, and B) unless they're hammered they know how dangerous a punch to the face can be. You can seriously mess up an unprepared, untrained person with a direct punch to the face. Guy got one-punched dead at the my local pub about 10 years ago. It's no joke.

We don't know what exactly happend with McKenna. But the people saying they'd cold-#### someone if they insulted their mom are either lying or morons.

Just confirmed with my best friend who's a criminal defense attorney, practicing in Calgary, but very familiar with US law.

He will likely have charges dropped in lieu of a payout, and since this isn't the NFL, his draft status won't be affected likely.

If the reason he tossed first is true, while I don't condone tossing first, someone says something about my mom or family, I can see why.

In any event, we will see how it all plays out when evidence comes to light.

Rumour circulating that the victim pushed McKenna’s mother, in addition to calling her a whore.

Allegedly.

Keep the politics out of here. My god.

Mckenna likely gets off this with a settlement at most.
Lawyers will be on this from McKenna and likely Penn State.

If the victim physically harmed McKennas mother at all, case will be dismissed.

You can't be punching out people even if they're saying horrible ####, now you're getting charged in your draft year, this dude is gonna sue and take money from you too in addition to insulting your mom, and teams are going to rightly question your judgement and maturity.

EDIT- If the guy actually laid hands on the mom then everything I said is moot and you're 100% in the right to neutralize the guy and it shouldn't be criminal or effect draft stock.

I'm surprised a skinny kid like that has enough of a punch to break someone's jaw

If anything, this raises his draft stock

This is a nothingburger. Won't affect his stock negatively at all.

This is hockey.

Yeah I'm not saying responding to words with violence is alright at all - but a few more accounts surfacing that the man who got knocked out was really going at his mom and possibly even pushed her in front of a huge crowd.

As such I really can't see the NHL fraternity looking down on him for this. And as others have said there are probably GMs out there where it actually raises his stock.

Again not saying that's right or wrong but hockey is also a violent sport where standing up for yourself and swinging first is celebrated. It probably only hurts him if he does get jail time or has his rights to work in the US impacted.

If it’s true they put their hands on his mom… I could see this being dismissed pretty quickly with even a half-decent lawyer. Defending a family member from someone who started getting physical against her. There are plenty of people in this world that would have little self-restraint in that scenario and would be justified in doing physical harm to someone that did.

Put me down as someone that wants him to be drafted by the flames even more if this is true about him KO-ing someone for putting their hands on his mom and calling her that.

Okay sure. But after 20+ years doing bar security work I can 100 percent tell you from experience, bar fights happen frequently and often under the very circumstances that are rumored here. If it's not mom it's a girlfriend or a bro or any such person close to the person who felt they needed to fight/defend someone. No tough guy BS here, just pure experience and perspective from someone whos broken up a thousand bar fights .

Conversely, there's other rumors McKenna went off on someone who was chirping him for not being to buy booze at said bar where he removed his underage bracelet. If that's true, then thats another story and asks for a more damning look at the McKenna.
