I think it's worth finishing Act 3 even if you decide to skip Karmelita. There's a lot of great lore to come that makes it worth the effort, and the final fight is pretty epic.
If you haven't done it yet, the Wish for Mister Mushroom is a nice tour of Pharloom and a great break from hard as hell boss fights.

I eventually managed to beat Karmelita (still don't know how, but at some point it clicked for me), got 100% on the game and beat the final boss. Liked the game enough to want to see it through, even with the game taking one final cheapshot by not awarding the "Completion" trophy when you reach 100% after doing the final boss, not before.
I liked A LOT about this game, including some really difficult bosses ... learning the patterns until it finally "clicks" was fun for the most part. Loved a lot of the bosses (Lace, First Sinner, Trobbio, Cogwork Dancers, Phantom etc), loved the lore, loved the characters, loved the graphics and sound design. Loved the pure platforming areas. Absolutely loved Hornet's gameplay in every aspect, even though I probably didn't experiment enough with different crests and tools. Ultimately, I was comfortable with the Reaper Crest for the majority of the game ... and the Cogflies/Pollip Pouch combo carried my ass hard.
But it was also BY FAR the most frustrating game I've ever played and I still think a lot of the frustration was by the design and unnecessary. Punishing runbacks and gauntlets really don't add a lot of value in my opinion. For my taste, the game just too often hates the player and tries to be an ####### on purpose. Then again, I admit I rarely venture into playing these types of games, so I'm sure a lot of people will disagree

in the end, I'm happy I managed to beat the game ... and I wanted that damn "Completion" trophy for my efforts, so I beat the final boss a second time. And now I'm the hell out
