Trading UFA’s yes. The Toffoli and Mangiapane examples are weak. He also traded a 2nd, Prospect and UFA for 2 veterans (not against the deal just pointing out facts).
I think it is fair to say things are going in the right direction but I also think the reaction this fanbase has had is valid and a facepalm from our hockey ops department.

We'll agree to disagree on this. I believe you're reading some things into the comments that just aren't there. I guess we'll see how things unfold from here.

"A prospect for veterans"...
Frost was 25, Farabee was 24 and Pelletier was 23 at the time of the trade.

Aren’t the flames the only team in the last 20+ years to not pick in the top 3 or make it to the third round?

And that’s fair I wouldn’t want to paint everyone with the same brush. But I think it’s a little early to start fire Maloney chants at the game tonight. IMO there definitely are some posts in this thread acting like we just announced we’re firing Conny for not toeing the line and trading our 1st this year for an aging vet to help our playoff push.
I also fully understand the pain that this organization has gone through with their lack of high-end prospects or playoff success. So I totally get that people are somewhat reluctant to put their faith in the organization right now.

He was 18. He currently is in his sophomore season as a RW at Michigan State and has 1 goal and 2 assists in 11 games. Will be interesting to see how he turns out.

Meh. They can flip Frost for a top 50 pick. That was a good asset management trade.

I actually don’t read it as harshly as you. He’s not wrong that the team would probably be better with them but I don’t really see where’s he saying they should still be on the team. The only thing that gives me pause is Conroy’s contract status.

But why say it? The only reason to say we could use a couple of those guys, is as a cheap shot because he didn't think they should have been traded.
If he thought Conroy was doing a great job, and doing what he thinks is the right thing, he would have said something like "Conroy's doing great - look at how he handled all those expiring contracts in his first year"
Saying we could use a couple of those guys suggests it was a mistake

That's just being pedantic.
Farabee had played 384 NHL games over 6 NHL seasons before coming to Calgary.
Frost had played 278 NHL games over 5 NHL seasons before coming to Calgary.
Pelletier had played 61 NHL games when we traded him. We also included a 2nd round pick, a 7th round pick and the top-six winger playing with Kempe and Kopitar in LA (who is 1pt out of the the division lead).
All that for a couple of young reclamation projects (that could come in and help make the playoffs) and zero draft picks or prospects.

So is your argument on Kuzmenko, citing that he is a top 6 winger, that the Flames should have signed him?
Not sure the fact that Pelletier is pretty much the same age and has never been able to stick in the NHL makes him a prospect.
I have acknowledged they traded what ended up now being a sophomore RW with Michigan State who has 3 points in 11 games. Will be interesting to see how he turns out and if the trade tree ends at Farabee and Frost on the Flames side.

I'm not against the return we got, but we very clearly traded out draft picks plus assets for two roster players that had each played enough NHL games to know exactly what we were getting. Flipping Frost and Farabee afterward for draft picks would have been in-tune with a rebuilding effort. What we did was try to add a couple of young current NHLers that could help us make the playoffs,,, which is actually in tune with what Maloney has said ("no draft picks") and what Edwards said a couple weeks back ("we like our core, we want to add pieces").

We will see but so far they haven’t really done anything that hasn’t been rebuild oriented so seems like a bit of bumbling around from Maloney. See where the team is at when the deadline hits.

It was shuffling around bodies with the upside that they could get more value out of Frost and Farabee. Kuzmenko looked terrible and was trending towards being valueless and Pelletier couldn’t crack the line up. I’ll bet they get more futures from Farabee and Frost than they gave up

lol
For the last two years they've done nothing but trade older players for picks, prospects and younger players and hover around the cap floor with the payroll.
They are rebuilding. The proof is in what they do, not what they say.
Until they change what they are doing, I'm not buying the BS

And I'll bet that Frost and Farabee are currently cemented in as part of this team's core. The only way they'll get us more futures is by helping us lose and draft in the top three.

If that was the case they would have given Frost a longer contract. I’m guessing neither are on the team in two years.

So you think that the Flames will let them walk at some point in time or do you think that they will play for the Flames for the next 10 years? Those are the two options where the Flames do not get something back for them at some future date.
