Draisaitl needs to be a complete anomaly for this contract not to be bad.

The guy is elite and it's a great contract for next few years. When he sucks, the oilers won't be in contention anymore, so it won't matter.
The only thing that matters is winning a cup and this contract helps the bums up north.

Who cares? Kaprizov is going to get paid $17M a year.
That's the new market standard for elite players. I would rather have Drai @ $14M than Kaprizov @ $17M.

I’d rather have Bennett at $8M than Drai at $14M

Why did this thread even get bumped? Who gives a rats a$$ about Pissy and his contract. He hasn’t won a damn thing and like the other glitter twin he isn’t a team first guy. Neither of those guys give a crap about winning, all personal stats. Could pay him $8MM or $20MM it isn’t going to make a lick of difference.

If Drai gets 100 points at 34 without McDavid I'm sure you will come bump this...but until then STFU. Saying I told you so before it starts let alone half way or 3/4 through when we can actually judge if it aged well is just stupid. And very Oilery I might add.
Also, both contracts might age poorly so todays deal is irrelevant.

It’s probably just Coiler fan clamoring for a “Best Value Contract For 100 pt+ Player To Never Win Anything” banner to be raised. They are big on their banners up there. Probably hoping to see another appearance by Mavi’s dog.

Genuinely got 3 different chuckles with this post! Awesome! The winner was the Lenard reference.
Sure, the contract as a percentage of overall cap will reduce, but it’s the next 8 years that will be the judge of points per cap percentage.
This upcoming season, it’s all on one line. What do they do when that hits its hard days…break it up? Send Mavi to the wing or the second line?
If/when/whatever Mavi does, this might be the peak of pissy’s statistics. He can’t play more, he won’t get better linemates, and everyone is getting older.
It’s beautiful. Oh and 8 years starting now.

I reeeeally like Bennett, but I firmly believe that if Draisaitl could ever get himself out of Edmonton, he would be unstoppable.
Let's face it, we'd all be little pissy, arrogant, non-backcheckers if we had to play for the Oilers as long as he has. He'd be an absolute monster (in a good way) on a franchise like Florida or Tampa. Colorado. Dallas. Places that treat their players well and surround them with teammates that can pull their weight. Edit: And a top-notch coaching staff (which maybe applies more to TBL and FLA than COL and DAL).

Here's the other big issue. If McDavid re-signs, is he taking less?
The current knock against the Oilers is that they lack cap space to improve their depth and goaltending. Having their top players cash in, really doesn't provide them with that room.
They've already bled good young players like Holloway due to cap restraints. The only players they've drafted since McDavid's draft year, that are still on the team, are Skinner and Bouchard. They've lost two of their top five scorers from last year in Kane and Perry, with no room to replace them.

It will once mcdavid re-ups. Then they will have 3-4 years of growing cap, no major contracts to renegotiate and all core players still in their prime.
Assuming McDavid recommits to the oilers, the oilers have a few more kicks at the cup.

Which core players is that?
Mcdavid? Sure, he's gonna be 30, so probably not in his "Prime" but even a declining McDavid is still pretty darn good.
Draisaitl? Same as Mcdavid.
Bouchard? Yup, he is part of the core and I'd say he's in his prime. He'll put up points on the PP but continue to hang his goaltender out to dry.
Other than that, what vets do they have signed past 26/27?
Hyman?
The Tenderness?
Nurse?
Frederick?
Podkolzin?
So 3 older guys who are definitely not in their primes, and a couple guys who wouldn't exactly be hard to replace.
Then youth maybe?
Howard?
Savoie (not technically signed, and there's time for them to mess that up).
So to recap, your definition of "all core players still in their prime"
Is 2 great forwards, a top line defenseman who can't play defense, a couple vets on their way down, some replacement middle 6ers, and a couple question mark prospects.
Gotcha, that's a bright 3-4 years indeed.
The Oilers MABYE have one more shot at it this year, but does anyone think the team this year is better than, or as good as, the one they iced for the playoffs last year?
