Flames also had Brett Kulak (projected Top 4 in Edmonton this year) in the system then, too.

Training camp is around the corner. Where is the McDavid contract?
How is the Oilers doomsday clock looking?

yeah and his point isn't even that they had all of Kulak, Valimaki, Kylington, Andersson, Fox or their equivalents at one time- just that they have always- in retrospect had one Kulak or Kylington in their system

Couldn't that article be, that the Oilers drafting is so bad that they've literally ruining their 20 year streak of wrecking defensive prospects, because they have no real defensive prospects?

I just learned in an article from the Athletic that the Oilers defence is and I quote,
"recognized as being top-drawer. It is so deep that any trade in-season for a goaltender may include a defenceman as part of the assets out."
I'm confused, where is this depth? Am I missing something? The Oilers have some of the worst defensive depth in the league and literally not one player on the farm team to come play any real minutes.

Mcdavid blinders are real. He alone gives each player on the team +10 to all skills and casts confusion and charm on all reporters.
Also, defence in modern NHL is more about your offence than it is about keeping pucks out of your own net. No more “a goal prevented=a goal for” mentality.
On this topic, I saw a cray trade proposal where the oil send ackey and ekholm out for Jake dedrusk. Same thing was said there, “oilers d is so deep they can afford to send out their only defensive D man and their only D prospect and they will still be fine!”
Lunacy.

Beau Akey might nab them a goalie from a team that is near max contracts and needs to find someone to take one from the bottom of the list.

One of Cooley or Prosvetov will need to clear waivers. I wouldn't be shocked if the Oilers take one of them (likely Cooley).

Mavi Diary - Day 26
Dear diary. I’m mad. My posse including my medical team that travel with me advised that literally nothing is happening on signing players for the oilers. I’m speechless a bit more than usual.
To make matters worse, I keep reading that I’m going to take a hometown discount. And in addition, I’m going to sign for 4 years to maximize my salary. Here’s an idea, how do you spell “max” in numbers? Apparently I’m doing this to help the Oilers get better, but that’s GM Stan’s job, and my job is to make the Oilers better myself. I’m one day closer to an actual hometown discount which would literally be for the leafs in my hometown.
I’m stunned because obviously people have no idea what it’s like to be me. Trove bar, Lauren’s clothing line, Lauren’s design firm, and my self snow melting driveway don’t pay for themselves you know. What are these people thinking? It’s not even their money.
My medical series on Sportsnet which starred me and detailed health miracles has given me some ideas for future shows. I saw how good Leon looked in his cigarette dangling picture, and he even had his matching sliders on (!), and I’m thinking about a love island show. I’m going to partner with Leon and we can strategize and vote the wives off. They have started talking about how much fun travelling together is and now they want to come on road trips with the team. That’s a hard no because we talk about strategy and I get to look at Leon for just a few more minutes.
I’m thinking about a cooking show and Leon can wear that sexy onesie from his commercials. We will end the show with me telling people to dig in…right effing now. That’s because shows have time limits and someone else needs the studio so people should eat what I made them.
Another show I’m going to call “Crossovers”. You might think that it’s about me doing other jobs, but in reality it’s just going to be me showing my crossovers in other industries. I’m going to show how fast I can crossover as a waiter and only spill a little soup because of how fast I go and my hand eye coordination. Dogs will love how fast I can get through their route due to my speed when I dog walk them.
“HIStory with me, Connor” will be Ron Maclean talking for 30 minutes straight about me. This will be easy because we’ll just record Sportsnet from the previous week.
I’m off now as Leon is going to teach me how to smoke and skinny dip! We might be able to sell this to HBO!
Later diary!

Lots of unreliable sites say McDavid will re sign for 2-4 years before the season begins
Are any legit sources saying this as well?
I'm really hoping he doesn't re sign and bolts as a UFA next summer but these articles, albeit unreliable sources, are really dampering my expectations

This has been the speculation from a lot of people, including Friedman.
And it makes sense.
He probably isn't ready to move on, including just after his bud Leon committed. But he doesn't want to tie himself there for the rest of the career. I think he signs for 3 years.
I think he knows that not winning a cup for the team that drafted him will significantly affect his legacy.

My biggest worry is this. McDavid is willing to stay a couple more years and try and win a cup before leaving.
He signs long term in a couple years when the cap goes up.
Signs a discount deal for 2-3 years with the Oilers to try and get them a cup.
If sign 2-3 years and still takes the $15M+, then it probably is ok as the Oilers just won't be better than they were the last 2 years.

I think he really values his legacy too. If you look at the numbers, he is 118 points away from 1200. He has a chance to have 1200 points before he is 30. Only an injury can stop that.
He also is 31 points behind Yzerman for 11th all time in playoff points, once again even a 3rd round exit he could be 11th all time in playoff points before he is 30.
If he wins 1 cup in Edmonton, moves on and wins 1-2 more elsewhere (brings a cup back to Toronto would be huge) and finishes up with 2000+ points and 2nd all time in playoff points. Alot of people will pick in as the best player in the history of the game.
