Yeah this isn't a terrible decision.

Avoiding arbitration means you can move him right away with no restrictions, it allows them to shop him wirh a more reasonable AAV which is attractive to more teams, and then allows the new team that acquires him to have time to negotiate the long term deal if they want when that time comes.

At least it was 2 years. Could have been worse. I think if Buffalo is out of a playoff spot (which is pretty likely), they are going have him dealt at the TDL. Doubt they would want to be in a position of trading with him without an extension. Let the other team deal with that.

Ah thanks Matt. I had wondered earlier why do a 2 yr contract instead of waiting for the 2yr arb contract but forgot you can't get traded on the latter (1st year). Thanks!

I don't think so. Trade talks will continue to remain hot.

I think you can still trade a player after arbitration if the team accepts the arbitration award levied. It's a player who signs an offer sheet who can't be traded in the first year.

The only restriction on trades and arbitration is that the player can not be traded in the time frame between when one side files for arbitration and after the team accepts the arbitrator decision or the two sides agree to a contract. So Byrum was in a spot where he could not be traded while they waited for arbitration. Similar with Matthew Tkachuck in that the Flames had to sign him to that contract before they could trade him to Florida as it happened after the Flames took him to arbitration and before the arbitration award was accepted.

Anyone think Zary isn’t signed yet because he’s being moved for Byram? Or someone else?

He is probably just on a vacation. Conroy said it is pretty common for lots of players and management around the league to take a break right after the draft and free agency.

Nah. Probably just a player with very little leverage trying to squeeze out whatever they can at the moment. He's had an injury riddled, well, career to this point. Team doesn't know what he is yet, and Zary wants to prove he's more than what they've seen but also get paid to do that.

IMO

"The Buffalo Sabres signed restricted free agent defenceman Bowen Byram to a two-year, $12.5 million contract on Monday with an annual cap hit of $6.25 million."
That being said, you bring up a good point, why isn't zary signed? Could be a non issue, as a poster said he could be on vacation.

I dont think so.
Both sides want a deal done from what I've heard.
It comes down to length and term, Calgary wants a "show me" contract given injury history etc so 2-4 years where as Zary's team is asking for 5+

Steinberg was saying the reverse. He also said both sides want a deal done, but believes it is Conroy looking for longer term as he believes in the potential and is buying low. Zary camp wants to earn more money naturally, so looking to prove his worth on short term deal.

I like the Steinberg version personally. Zary not going to get much AAV on a long term deal yet, just 27 career NHL goals and some availability concerns. I like the idea of him wanting to bet on himself.

I'd gamble on Zary all day but it would need to be reflected in the AAV. 6 years at 5 million. My guess though is that his team wants the term and dollar which you can't do at this time.

Thanks, Royle. Unless the dollar ask on a 5+ year deal is significantly higher, I find it odd that Calgary isn't taking the risk by getting him signed to term -- particularly with the way Calgary is rumoured to feel about him (and not including him in the Cozens offer).

They've got the cap space now and if he develops as they expect, and doesn't run into long term injuries, they'll get higher value in the future when cap space is likely tighter.

Maybe the long term dollars he wants is too high... or then again, maybe this is just negotiations.

Steinberg mentioned the opposite on Flames talk last week, I believe (that Calgary is sold on Zary's potential and wants to go long-term, but Zary's camp knows they can get a lot more if Zary puts up big points on a bridge deal).

Yeah, the contract doesn't scream "long term plans" from either side. Maybe he plays out the contract there, but I expect he gets traded the moment Buffalo gets an offer they can live with.

It is is more the title i guess that could change . Talks have very clearly cooled off. It is also somewhat redundant with the Trade Speculation and Rumours thread at this time.

I suspect it's this
- Calgary wants to go long-term, but on a deal largely based on his current performance, with a bit of upside for assumed continued growth.
- Zary would go long-term but would want a deal that reflects more growth, and therefore a higher dollar figure
- Calgary would similarly go short-term, probably 3 years, with a pretty cheap per year deal that reflects his performance to date
- Zary would take a deal that reflects performance to date, but would probably prefer 1 year, so he can cash in after a better year

It's not a case of one side wanting long or short and the other not. It's about the dollars and terms being very different for both sides under either scenario.

They will settle somewhere in the middle with a 2 year deal I bet.
