Don Cherry wasnt racist, but wasn't progressive or politically correct either. I think he was just from a different era and remained on HNIC well past his best before date, long after he had become unrelatable to many younger Canadians, especially those who were urban, progressives. His view of Canadian values less and less represented the present. And he became a symbol to old, white Canadians of the old times, when people had more respect, honesty, integrity. Times changed, but HNIC refused to move on from Cherry. Until they were ready.

And then they did him dirty which was upsetting. He deserved something more fitting of a loyal, long term face of the show. But it was long past time for him to go.

Ron did him dirty too, but probably has created an internal narrative that allows him to live with himself without being a ####ty friend and colleague who saved himself instead of standing up for Cherry. Everyone is the hero of their own story.

In its heyday, however, casual (and even some non-hockey) fans would tune into HNIC every Saturday just to watch Coach's Corner. It was "water cooler" television that everyone talked about Monday morning. There is no modern equivalent on the Canadian sports scene, and there hasn't been for decades.

For those of a certain generation, there is a healthy dose of nostalgia involved whenever Coach's Corner is discussed, which colours the conversation somewhat.
I didn't see much of 80s-90s coach's corner on a count of being a child.

But thanks for weighing in with the "actually it peaked in x" old timer rebuttal.

Can't believe the plug wasn't pulled on them in the late 00s given how long it had already been on.

They're even older than I realize sometimes. Why the #### is Ron still on TV at this stage. He's going to go from tooting the oilers' horn straight to the hospice.

Absolutely, and same boat here. I couldn't even finish it

Loved them back then but shudder at the thought of them now with what we know about CTE. We didn’t know it yet but we were watching people get killed.

the CBC and the NHL profited handsomely from Don Cherry who put hockey night Canada on the map and was a vital part of our uni culture as Canadians for decades. I really doubt the guys a bigot in the traditional sense that people think of the word. He was pretty backwards about europeans and anyone who wasn't Canadian. He loves Canada and is a patriot.

Was he becoming a little embarrassing like my Dad and many of your Dads and uncles? Yeah for sure. but the CBC was happy to trot him out for ratings then that weasel Maclean and the cbc/sportsnet apparatus turned on him when the woke mob came , frothily , for blood. I don't think I'd vote for a guy like Don Cherry for PM but that doesn't mean he's a bad person or some hateful biggot.

It's a disgrace what happened to him.

The consensus seems to be that Coach's Corner was well past its expiry yet Rogers kept trotting it out every Saturday fully knowing this but didn't care because all they cared about was propping up TV ratings. Rogers also deserves a lot of criticism because they knew full well what they had with Cherry, his views, what he was capable of, and they were willing to exploit Cherry for as long as they could milk it as they all knew that the day would come when Cherry would say something like that but they didn't care about protecting Cherry or the legacy of Coach's Corner. They just cared about milking it as long as they possibly could for ratings.

Patriot, woke mob, a disgrace what happened to him?

Are you serious right now. This wasn’t a one time slip up.

To assume he is like others dads uncles is crazy talk. I assume you mean old white men? Not everyone white person is a bigoted buffoon.

Don is a product of the time and culture he grew up in, and happened to be outspoken and blunt which is what made him marketable.

I've heard far worse out of said dads and uncles. He actually showed reasonable restraint given his personality and given that he was paid to be loud and old school.

Does that mean his takes are all excusable and he couldn't do better to adapt to the changing times? Of course not.

What wound up happening was probably an inevitability and like others said Rogers milked it for all it was worth to the bitter end for ratings.

Not sure you picked up what he was actually saying.

He's suggesting he may not have been an actual bigot if you excuse pro Canada nationalism.

He tended to not want players taking Canadian jobs in the NHL.
He pushed hard for respect for the military and first responders.

I think nationalism can get you in trouble. It got him in trouble.

I think he was a bigot if you let "everyone else" be a group that he didn't like (anyone but Canadians) but I don't think I recall any ethnic or race specific bigotry.

He had to go. It ran it's course. I just wish they found him a softer landing.

I hate Ron the rat. Don Cherry was great entertainment.

People used to say a lot of things that would be seen as terrible now. Don Cherry grew up in that era and did not learn how to tone it down.

I'm not going to hate an old guy for not being able to change and adapt. People like Ron come across as so fake to me.

So, is Cherry coming out with a book or something and Ron is looking to get ahead of some dirt coming his way?

Yeah, he was guilty of nationalism, not bigotry. And he was an entertainer - and obviously a successful one, based on the passionate conversations continuing on, years after his retirement.

I don't get the need to tear everyone apart now, and have their legacy publicly desecrated. Times were different, and standards were different. IMO, it's okay to improve and correct our views without attacking the people of prior generations who held those archaic views, because they were simply products of their time, as we are products of ours.

I know a few people like this. Who tear down anyone with a controversial past.

The funny thing is, these same people have said some terrible things in the past as well when they were younger. Things that would get you cancelled now. But obviously they were never publicly documented or scrutinized the way they do to other people.

The hypocrisy is crazy to me.

Huh? Don regularly made bigoted comments about Europeans, Russians, Swedes, Women, “people who come here,” French Canadians, etc.

He specifically targeted people all the time. Homophobic comments, misogynistic comments, basically his whole schtick was standing up for straight, white, old stock Canadian men and putting down everyone else.

He wasn’t “just” nationalistic, and anyone who is pretending he was just a product of his time is being stupid, he was criticized repeatedly for his comments over the past 30 years. There are articles from the 90s of Don’s controversial bigotry. People who think it was ever “OK” just want to excuse their own past and present.

Character Arc coming. Grand reunion. God I hope they don't do that. Hosted by Strombo and Ben Mulroney and Erika Ehm.

It would be so CBC.

Can't you just disagree without insulting people?

I personally think he was so pro Canada that it got cringey ... said it above.

No need to refer to me or others as stupid, nor infer we are trying to cover for our own indiscretions.

Just disagree dude. I don't need you to agree with me or others.
