Did you expect the NHL to do something to protect major junior hockey in their CBA? That’s not exactly their mission.
The so called loophole (it never actually was a loophole) is gone, doesn’t matter what you do after being drafted. Which is as it should be IMO.

This is debatable. Players in the NCAA get more practice time along with considerably more time in the gym to build their bodies while playing against older and, presumably, bigger men. I don't believe there's any evidence out there that playing more games and spending a large portion of their downtime riding buses is more or less beneficial for player development.

An EBUG actually getting playing time has only happened 6 times in NHL history, and 3 played less than 2:30, with only one of those 3 even facing a shot.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goalte...-up_goaltender
Good for those 32 guys who get to cash a regular pay cheque taking shots in practice and travelling with an NHL team.

The EBUGs will probably have dual roles in some capacity. Teams will probably just make sure that at least one staff member that travels with the team is also a goalie.

The teams still need extra goalies for practices.

This is true, I suspect that load management will be the priority with the extra games.

I agree it is debatable but that is the CHL argument. Although NCAA players might be older and bigger, the game itself is very different than the NHL. So I’m not putting much weight on that. NHL players often talk about how adapting to the longer season is so difficult.
I’d welcome any evidence one way or the other.

Powerplay Quarterback

I would have loved to see the contract length maximums similar to the NBA. Four years for 99% of players, five years for the top guys who win a major award like the Vezina or Norris trophy. We're stuck paying Huberdeau top dollar for six more seasons. There's little hope for us to turn things around with contracts like that. Heck, we had a goalie who was damn near in contention for the Vezina this year and we still didn't make the playoffs.
We're eventually going to get to a time where players are drafted when they are 21-22, just like in the NFL. Picks would be worth so much more if you're drafting guys who can play right away, instead of what we have now where you're taking educated guesses on how good teenagers might be in three to five years.

No more "paper loans"
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/645...schedule-ltir/
Quote:
The NHL is eliminating “paper loans,” which occurred when players were assigned to the AHL on paper only and never had to report to the minor-league club.
That practice reduced the players’ compensation because they were paid at the AHL rate for the days they were on loan.
The CBA extension requires that a loaned player play in one minor league game before being recalled.

Camp cut in half almost. No fitness testing. 4 pre season games. The product is going to be interesting on the ice. More injuries ?

I'm glad they added the NCAA provision. That would have been unfortunate to either force the player to leave school to sign or have a team lose a player because he wanted to complete his program.
