Ekblad and Bennett both need to be re-signed, it would make sense to call Calgary and pay the 2027 1st round pick and letting Ekblad go get 8-9m elsewhere. Andersson at 50% makes a lot of sense for them while they wait for Bob's 10m to expire in 2026. Andersson would have some familiarity with Tkachuk and Bennett. Would also have a reliable partner in Forsling or Miikola on the left side to allow him to play a little more offensively.
Andersson is an attractive target for the Panthers. The feeling is they’re going to let Ekblad walk, so they’ll have a big hole at RD. Andersson’s low cap hit would be very appealing

Not sure about the 2027 1st as a return. The Flames want to turn things around sooner rather than later, and a 2027 1st is likely 5-6 seasons from playing in the NHL. I could see a hockey trade working for both teams. Luostarinen is only 26 and has a lot of experience at C. The only reason he’s playing LW is because the Panther are ridiculously deep at C. With his size and physical two-way play, he could be a long-term solution for the Flames at #3C and bring an element to the forward group that the organization is lacking. He may provide more offence, too, if given more opportunity (he has 43 points two seasons ago).

The Panthers would likely only make the deal if they bring Bennett back, otherwise they’ll need Luostarinen as a shutdown 3C themselves. It isn’t a sexy move, but it’s the kind of add I could see Conroy making.

And in Feb last year, someone suggesting a return for Hanifin of VGK’s 2025 1st and 3rd and Miromanov would have been called out as a Debbie Downer. A proposed deal with TBL for Howard + Gautier + Lilleberg + a 2nd (1st if Hanifin signed) was dismissed as meh.

I honestly don’t think there was a single speculated Markstrom or Hanifin deal on this board for less than what the Flames ended up getting for those guys.
If you look I said Markstrom and 25% retained for Bahl and their 1st. But I also call out posters yearly for expecting too much.

Rasmus best return imo would be mid pick this year and conditional 1st down the road. Hopefully Conroy goes that direction over a late 1st this year

Flames need a swing over a third line center

What about pinto as a primary piece for Rasmus. More upside then luostorinen.

24, multiple 20 goal years and a RS center with size. Feels like there could be more offense there still.

Somewhat expendable in the Sens system with Cozens now, and they need a long term RD.

I agree. But the Flames brass seem to want a quick re-tool, and Conroy has talked repeatedly about looking for 22-26 year old guys who could blossom with more opportunity.

Pinto would be a nice get. If the Sens put him on the market, they’d get a lot of interest.

That’s not a bad framework. Would love to make it a bigger deal if possible, maybe getting Chabot from them. Would give them the cap to extend Andersson. We would have to add though, so maybe Pinto for Andersson 1 for 1 makes sense with Cozens there.

The Sens have 17 mil in cap space next season, and the only biggish name to sign or replace is Giroux.

Carolina seems like the most obvious landing spot for Rasmus given their draft picks and UFAs.

Does seem like Marner will move on. I think a team that makes a lot of sense is LA. They are likely desperate to get another offensive piece and it puts him on a good team with less media scrutiny.

The Kings don't need another playoff no-show.
I think a team who was on the outside looking in will make a strong push for Marner. I just hope it's not the Flames.

But the only opening they have is Burns who is UFA, and they can fill that with Nikishin.

Carolina seems more like the kind if team that lets an Anderson walk, not sign him to a long term extension.

Plus they have no need for him.

Huberdeau to the Leafs for the right for Marner. Doesn’t matter if they sign him or not.

Treliving is crazy enough to double down on his mistake

Orlov is a UFA as well. Orlov is a left shot but plays the right side, if he and Burns are gone that leaves Sean Walker and Jalen Chatfield who are right shots, neither are capable of playing big minutes on a top pair however.

Missed Orlov.

But Andersson hasn't exactly covered himself in glory in top pair duties, either.

1st round pick is just another asset, the Flames could use that to acquire a "now" player as well.

Fair enough. But it’s still a long ways out, and only teams doing a deep rebuild are going to value it highly. That’s the problem with trading with any of the contending teams - they’ve traded away all their 1st round picks for years.

I wonder if a trade around Frost or Backlund for Zibanejad would make any sense for the Flames. He had a pretty bad year in NY, and if he plays the same or regresses then he's overpaid by about $2M. The other drawbacks are that he's signed and paid $8.5M until 2030, or until he's 37 years old.

That said he's 2 years removed from a 91 point season. Also, he averaged 0.92 ppg over the last 3 years, which projects to 28 goals, and 75 points.

The player could use his NMC to block such a trade, but he could be a poor man's #1C.

No he is not.

Yes he made a mistake signing Huberdeau.

Of course 90% of CP agreed with that mistake and were wanting to build a statute at the Saddledome in honour of Trev for that trade and mistake.

That would be a typical Flames move designed to keep them in the mushy middle and handicap them for years to come.

I'm not sure what relevance being 2 years removed from being a 91 point player is to his production now.

He had a very bad year, and it was actually worse than his stats.
