After several rounds of that, they doubled down on it and made us do it again, this time saying what you're thankful for. Just turned into employer arse-kissing, "I'm thankful for such great co-workers/employer", etc etc. Felt so fake.

Like what was the point of that? The majority of people clearly hated it; basically played hot potato with the ball, mortified the music would stop on them lol.
This sounds like a scene from The Office. Are they aiming for Michael Scott 3-D chess where distractions from your work are so cringey they make you actually want to be working?

Reading that story and then seeing your avatar really makes me want to hear Larry David's take on that version of leadership training.

Yesterday was without a doubt the worst I have ever seen the TCH. It's common now to be backed up EB coming back to Calgary at the end of the day (and it was at a dead stop yesterday too for km at a time when we came home) but I have NEVER seen things backed up to a stop headed WB in the morning. No accidents, simply volume. Right from Calgary city limits to where we bailed out and too Hwy 68. Brutal.

In my office we have employee Morale days too. They're called Fridays and we meet at the Bar.

And I wont lie, its a lot like Festivus. There is an airing of grievances but those grievances never leave the Bar!

Haha I had the exact same thought during it. I'd never wanted more to just be sitting at my desk plugging away, it's mental sabotage.

My company used to have the team building crap condensed into a full day of activities once a year. All sorts of silliness, making lists, giving feedback, playing games, it was torturous.

Every single one of us hated it and dreaded that day on the calendar, some guys would book days off to get out of it.

Probably a mandate by the company that management perform group building activities. Our new engineering manager implemented a book club where we were supposed to read books on our own time and do a report. I was pretty horrified at having to read a book not of my own choosing on my own time but fortunately an indispensable programmer said he would quit if forced to do it and it went away.

#######s. You want to build a solid team? Give the other end of a long weekend off to everyone. Don't be an ####### about sick days, appointments, hybrid work.

Don't force people to do things they don't want to do and expect them to like it. This is just insane.

The beatings will continue until morale improves!!

Upon hearing Sainters' story I decided to do the same thing with my staff. We all sat in a circle passing a Rugby ball around and proclaiming what we really were grateful for in our office and about our jobs.

The intern was the first one to figure it out after about 5 minutes.

"Locke...this is ridiculous. You would never do this, this is so out of character! We should be working!"

I just said..."Yeah. I just thought it'd be fun to see how long you'd go along with it until you revolted!"

At which point he threw the Rugby ball across the room and went back to his office muttering "Yeah...thats more like it...dammit!"

Life lesson learned...always be the first one to revolt!

Missed opportunity. Should have gone into his office told him you were serious and felt strongly about and told him he is fired. Send him an email the next day, JUST JOKING!! Ah. Good times.

My partner buys into the manufactured holidays.

It’s Easter. So we have to dress up and go to church. I’m an atheist. Doesn’t matter, not worth the fight. I go and make nice.

We get home and she spends hours making Easter Dinner. Ham, potatoes, roasted Veggies.

Our kid is vegetarian. I have an early hockey game. She’s on a diet.

WHY ARE YOU DOING ALL THIS?!?!

We do a ton of fun stuff as a family that we all enjoy. But if Hallmark makes a card for it, she’s got this 1950’s fantasy in her head, and the rest of us just have to go along or deal with the emotional fallout for days.

Gifts for the kid today? I don't know when it happened or why but Easter is now a second Christmas. It has become a big gift giving holiday and it just seems so stupid.

Next holiday like that book a reservation at a nice restaurant (with veg options)
Preferably early enough to preclude a church visit.
Tell her its for her, you want to make a day for her when she doesnt have to exhaust herself cooking and can just enjoy it.

Hours? I spent, like 20 minutes doing prep. Ham, sliced taters, in the oven and cauliflower in the steamer ready soon. The trick is to be ruthlessly lazy in every option.

You sure her boyfriend isn't coming over when you head out for hockey?

Oh, so that's why I bought a huge new gaming monitor for myself. Nice.

Terrible, any interview immediately before or during a game where a player is in game mode is just so dumb. Just looking at this intense, focused player standing there with an annoyed look on their face as they blurt out the shortest, simplest answers possible to get away from it. Why do we do this?

All holidays are manufactured.

Presumably she has fond memories of the Easter traditions of her childhood, and wants to carry on with them. Which is pretty normal.

My grandma, mom and aunt went full Martha Stewart around the holidays. I don’t think they enjoyed a minute of it, but did it all out of a perverse sense of duty. We just wanted to spend time with them, but they spent all week in the kitchen.
