Agreed. And four nations aside, Marner hasn't been a difference maker in the playoffs at all for the Leafs. I'd be very interested this year if he can step up when he's pressed with the physicality.
I do still find it odd that Treliving would press him like that. He holds the cards. The time to press him would be in the off-season. As much as he wants to be a Leafs I'm sure his breaking point is nearing. It's not fun not to be liked when he's producing (again, at least in regular season). I get that Treliving wanted the certainty of Rantanen locked up but there had to be a better way of going about it.
I'm sure Tre would rather have a signed and locked up Rantanen then a non-commital Marner.
Sounds like he was giving Marner the option to lock up long term, as they would prefer to keep him over Rantanen.
Otherwise they would try and trade for a signed Rantanen. The players are fairly comparable in impact,I would rather have the signed one.
Guys like Marner come off so entitled to me. He already is going to have well over 100 million in contract money by the end of his career.
He hasnt won ####. If you love your home town team sooooo much then stop dragging them around and sign a reasonable contract. I'm sure he could walk in and ask for the rantanen deal and it would be signed in an hour.
MacKinnon got the biggest deal the time and it was a flat cap. Crysaddle just signed the biggest deal now. You think that’s a discount? Do you have intel on what other teams would have offered ?

You are so right
We should have traded Wolf at the deadline so we would have gotten a better draft pick and then won the Stanley Cup for sure!!!
How do we get you to be the GM/Coach?

No, but I think it’s more reasonable to assume another team would’ve offered more than to assume that is the maximum any team would’ve offered. Tavares took less than what the Sharks offered. There’s chatter Kadri took less to come here, then what was offered.
And we know for a fact Gaudreau took less. And I bet Crosby could’ve gotten more then 8.7 per year too.
To be clear, I’m not saying he’ll take a discount. Just refuting your claim that they don’t exist.
So you’re going to use assumptions to say they took discounts ? The league had no cap space.
Johnny and Matthew both signed for less than what the Flsmes offered. Tavares got 11AAV when double digits were not a thing.
No one is leaving money on the table to sign in Edmonton. He took 14.5 and the talk was that team might got 13/14 on him.
The Sharks offered Tavares 13. The moment Gaudreau turned down 8 years at 10.5 million, he knew he’d be getting less. You think he thought he’d get more knowing the max term would be 7 years?
12 or 13x8 is not a discount. It's fair value. Could he get more on the market? Sure. But it would be an overpay. Hes not even a top 10 player in the league.
Its fine if he wants to try and squeeze his home town team for everything he can. But then you obviously care more about money the winning and don't cry if the team plays hardball with moving you or the fans hate on you when you're not producing/winning.
It goes both ways.

Lol, who defines overpay? Market value is whatever someone deems you are worth to them. That’s market value.
Once again, I’m not arguing whether or not he will take a discount. I’m arguing his assertion they don’t exist.

I don’t know what he thinking and I don’t think his free agency was planned well.
You can keep thinking guys are taking discounts all over the league. They are not they are singing market value deals. Rantanen was just traded because he wouldn’t take less to stay in Colorado. Marchand was just traded as a 35 year old because he wouldn’t take less.

Saying they don’t exist, compared to me providing instances where they may, are two totally different things then saying it’s the norm.

I'm sure he'd take a "discount" of a small amount, but he simply wants to see what the max someone is willing to offer then take the discount from there. All in all some sucker will pay $14.5M/season. If it's a tax free state, that's a lot of money to be leaving on the table. I know what you're saying but there's no right answer here. I'm sure he loves the Leafs and his teammates, but he also doesn't want to take too steep a discount. I understand both sides here, but $14M tax free in Florida could be $11M in Toronto. I'm not sure many of us would leave $3M on the table, especially if a place like Florida offers a laid back lifestyle with less media coverage (perfect for him IMO). I'm guessing Tampa is the apple of his eye this off-season.

Clearly there are some overpays.
I would say a good guideline would be historical averages of comparable players/production and their % contract verse the cap.
Something in the 13% of totalcap range for Marner is very fair.

Yeah and that's fine. It's within his rights to turn down a fair contract for his home town team to maximize earnings and make 115 million instead of 100 million.
But then don't be chaffed when your GM is trying to leverage you into signing or being traded for a comparable player with more gurantee.
Or cry if the media is grilling you or you get booed by your home town.

I suspect Marner will be the prime target of Craig Conroy this summer. Can take faceoffs and is a top line player. Age be damned. If everyone and their dog was saying the Flames would push for Rantanen, Marner is in the same wheelhouse.

He is not signing in Canada outside of Toronto.
He is headed to Anaheim.
