Doesn’t seem like Rantanen is signing with anyone

Looks like Carolina will have to sell Rantanen as a rental or just keep him, let him go UFA with the risk of losing him for nothing, and hope for a deep playoff run.

Tough spot for Carolina. It hasn't been a fit, he seems disengaged or just going through the motions. Probably still shocked about getting traded. And stylistically doesn't look like a fit. Using him as an own rental isn't a great option.

What I heard was the deal was dead, Rantanen camp not budging on their ask dollars wise. What that number is I don't know.

If they can’t trade Rantanen for extension price, then you may as well spend some significant assets on a center (like Pettersson or something) and use Rantanen as a rental piece for a cup run.

Trading Rantanen at extension price > Keeping him for cup run > Trading him at rental price

I think that too. Or, going to the highest bidder. He’s smart, the cap is going up. Could even get more than Draisaitl. Likely a 100m+ deal for 7 years.

Makes you wonder if the Canes should just spend time loading up like Dallas is and just roll with Rantanen as their rental.

Use some assets to pick up Pettersson or if we want to make some Calgary noise, Andersson to Carolina.

Tulsky was a pretty hot GM candidate and there was lots of buzz about how he and Dundon were going to disrupt the way NHL front offices are run. But this whole situation is looking like a major gaffe.

They've either gotta walk Rantanen to UFA or get back pennies on the initial investment, and they've tanked the morale of their team in the process.

I sure don't get worked up about it. Not everything I don't necessarily agree with is "embarrassing".

Life's way to short and there's things for me to actually get worked up about as opposed to the Oilers-Kings first round matchup.

Also, I loved the old Smythe, Patrick, Norris, and Adams Division playoffs, so don't mind the divisional round. Bad luck the Kings have been the third best team in the division I guess...
