You'd be wrong.
A guy who can put up 30 goals, or close to 30 goals, in a season in the NHL has value. More value than a guy who is not able to put up 20 goals.
That value goes up if he is able to drive his own line. Also, positional value of being a natural C.
Being "old" does not eliminate a player's value. What it does is increase the risk that his value may diminish. But it isn't a hard and fast rule that a player is going to turn 35 and suddenly become a pumpkin. Some players are able to keep their game into their late 30s.
If the Avs feel that their cup window is still open right now and maybe for one more season then trading for Kadri does make sense and getting Mittelstadt's cap hit off their books also makes sense.
I can see the asking price for acquiring Kadri AND dumping Mittelstadt's $5.75 cap hit for two more years as costing someone like Ritchie.
I guess the question becomes, who is the competition for the Flames in making this trade? Who is ready to trade away a better, younger version of Kadri that can be a #2C on the Avs and is willing to take back Mittelstadt?

The real question is, does Kadri waive his NMC for such a trade? If not, it doesn't matter whether Colorado or any other team has an alternative.

Hopefully Nemec requests a trade and Conroy can pry him out of NJ.

If I was Conroy I'd be spending so much effort prying a D-man out of New Jersey despite it being our strength here. We don't know who will and won't turn out and I feel like you could get a surefire top 4 guy out of NJ due to their logjam.

We do not have a logjam of anything in this organization. This is such a rebuild fallacy pet peeve of mine. You don't take our NHL players + prospects and say 2 + 4 = 6 so we're full. That's ridiculous and many fans are doing it for both centers and D-men.
If you think you have a deal for a top 4, young D-man or top 6 center you do it if you feel they can reach their potential. You don't say things like "But where does Zary/Sharongovich or Defense prospect A/B fit if we bring that guy in?" You DO NOT do that when you're in a rebuild.
There's a better than good chance that 80% of the guys you had penciled in as top 6 forwards/defensemen will be fringe/out of the NHL guys in 3-5 years.

Sorry didn't mean to sound harsh but it's frustrating as I'm seeing a lot of this on the boards lately, especially at centre. We are nothing at center in terms of being a contender right now and yet when trade proposals come up I see posters saying how can we do that because where does that new center fit when we have four centers?
Someone would have to be moved OFF centre!!!!! Umm, yeah that's exactly what would happen when we're looking to find another true top six centre.

I'd be spending that effort on prying a centre out of somebody, precisely because that's the Flames' greatest weakness. Getting fixated on a particular trade partner is how you lose trades. Ignoring your greatest need to focus on smaller issues is how you wreck teams.

Why would the Flames trade for a 2C or 3C, which due to their position cost extra organizational assets to obtain, only to move a 2C to the wing, thereby both overpaying for an asset not needed and at the same devaluing their own asset? Kadri can serve well as a 2C until Zary can take over that role. What the team clearly does need is an elite 1C, and nobody currently in the org is projecting to fill this role. We need to add a centre to the organization, but if an acquired player can’t drive a top line on a Cup contender, then it’s mostly a lateral move. Let’s not waste any more assets on middle 6 forwards, we need genuine first line forwards. Those are hard and expensive to obtain by trade, so the Flames need to pile up draft picks and use them well.

If Kadri could get more than what I said, we would have traded him by now.
Teams aren't lining up for an aging and overpaid asset. At his age he is going to decline rapidly most likely.
And this isn't me being "eeyore". I have said you can get a lot for a player like Rasmus, at his age. But at Kadri's age and with his contact, that is a tough one to move.

There is like nobody (except for yourself) who thinks the flames are doing a destroy the franchise, sell everything, burn it to the ground rebuild. That is probably the reason why, amongst others, that the Flames have not traded a player they signed to a 7 yr contract and a guy who does not want to be traded, has not been traded. I don’t know that him not being traded is proof that he does not have value above a 2nd round pick.

Do people not know that Kadri has a full no movement clause? Not saying we've been offered anything either way but Kadri can nix any trade for this season and the next, and from what people in the know tell us here, he really likes Calgary and wants to be here. I think in the last 2 or 3 seasons it changes to a reasonably sized list NTC.

Have said for a while but without a lot of backing. Huby, kadri, sharky, Coleman are not going anywhere barring some miracle lopsided trade.
If you trade kadri a comparable center has to come back in any deal. Anderson if we lose eight in a row here he is probably the only one who would want Out and had any real value.
I see a quiet deadline unless someone comes to us with a cant refuse offer.

Also worth acknowledging, as far as I recall it, the Av’s wanted Kadri back, namely MacKinnon. I also suspect Kadri did not sign til late in that offseason to leave the door open in the event the Av’s were able to free up space to resign him.
Kadri was a cap casualty. The big question is, would Kadri go back at this point. Believe DO and others have said Kadri has family or his family has moved to Calgary. He may have no desire to go anywhere. But if he were, the Colorado seems like as good, or better, for than anywhere.
I’m not sure if this is a legitimate option for the Flames but it certainly should be of interest.

Agreed. A GM’s job is to improve the team. Could be for today or for tomorrow but if Conroy has an opportunity to improve the team, as he sees it, he should be doing that.
On other words, if he has an opportunity to add a better RHS D than the one(s) he has, he absolutely should do so.

Both can be true though.
At this point, I think the Flames need to concern themselves with continuing to build up a base of valuable young assets be it picks/prospects or young players.
Yes, C is the biggest hole, but the Flames, I don’t think, should turn down opportunities to improve elsewhere to chase positional specific needs.
The Flames are in year 1 of what should be a 5 year plan. In all likelihood, a C will be available to them at some point.

I don't think we are doing a sell everything rebuild. Although, we obviously should be.
These players like Kadri, Huberdeau, Backlund, Coleman are all aging and holding the Flames back from tanking.
If you can trade any of them for picks you should do it. Obviously, Huberdeau is untradeable with his contract and maybe Kadri too so it's not that simple obviously.
But absolutely we should be going scorched earth on any aging vets who are keeping us from being a bottom 5 team. I don't see Kadri not waiving his NTC, doesn't he want to win a cup? He ain't winning one here, cya buddy!

I think the scorched earth rebuild argument is incredibly naive.
It’s not happening nor is it likely ever to happen.

The best part about this rant is that it’s mostly a young player in Wolf and a hodgepodge on defense that has been keeping the Flames floating above where they should be. Huberdeau is the Flames leading scorer and is 91st in the NHL

Tell me what the point is of having Kadri on the team? If you can trade him, you do it.
We aren't a contender in the next few years and his contract will be over by the time we are competitive. Why would you keep him?
At least I can see a world where we keep Rasmus. I can maybe be swayed from trading him. But there is absolutely no way you keep Kadri if someone will take that contract off your hands.

Well it’s not their choice to have Kadri on the team now but they will have to take back some money if they did trade him. Is the team much worse if they take back Middlestadt?
