It's mostly the disgusting things she says and her mentality that make her repugnant, independent of who she "jokes around" with. Just something about her in close proximity with the orange clown than ups the ante and makes her even more repulsive.
It sounds like from Smith's comments that there are no indications that Trump is going to make any exceptions. She said we need to prepare for the tariffs starting immediately after he is inaugurated. Maybe he changes his mind last minute I guess.
FWIW, Alberta and Ontario have several international trade offices around the world. including ones in Washington, D.C., maybe other provinces do as well. It's not out of the ordinary for provinces to negotiate outside of the federal government. The premiere doing in person might not be that common though.
I don't mind her going down and advocating for Alberta and Canada in regards to the Tariff threat; but there is every indication that she is there merely for the benefit of Alberta PNG which i don't agree with.
Canada needs to be united on this issue. We carry a ton of weight in US trade across all the provinces, not just Alberta PNG. We hold more power when we bring everyone as a united front.
Her comments about a national identity crisis is 100% undermining our position as a country and shows she is only interested in getting Alberta a break on PNG and nothing else. She is the weak link in these negotiations and can be easily infiltrated and taken advantage of by the US.

Was about to say. Seeking a waiver from the upcoming tariffs would be the highest value item piece of business she could possibly do for the Province of Alberta at this time.
With the federal politics in shambles at the moment there's a massive leadership vacuum on this issue and highlighting a more nuanced take on the North American energy implications of the tariff is a prudent thing to do. Melanie Joly is proposing cutting off energy exports to the U.S. That both reckless and actually ignorant of Canada's own best interest because Line 5 and line 9 actually supply Ontario and Quebec but passes through Michigan.
Has she said this specifically? I had thought she had said "everything is on the table" which to me, is a far more useful negotiating tactic than saying the thing they need most, with the most leverage, is off the table. No?

Ultimately, she's doing a good thing trying to talk them out of tariffs. But it should have been a united delegation going. Not just her.

Alberta is in an amazing position here and Smith is doing a great job pressing that advantage. She should push even more to utilize Alberta's importance in terms of negotiating an improved deal with the rest of Canada. Trump's position is a gift to Alberta's leverage over the rest of Canada, and I expect Smith to make use of it.

How the F is the rest of Canada a third party? Albertans are a part of Canada and obviously have significant interests in protecting Canada's interests. How does one separate ones' interests as an Albertan from ones' interests as a Canadian in circumstances like this? Seems totally impossible.
