That's not what that means at all. It means they literally just drafted him and don't have any appetite to trade him before even seeing what he could be, and will likely trade almost anything else before a centre with huge upside?
How often do teams trade a top 15 pick in the same draft year before knowing what they have? Especially a highly thought of centre? I would put lots of money on him being untouchable in a trade right now, but yet he keeps coming up as a trade piece. is this coming from somewhere or just standard CP hoping that turns to "speculation"?

You seem to have a stronger grip on Zegras than anyone in media by a country mile. Question would be - What are you hearing in terms of what it would take to get him out of Anaheim?

Clearly.
The question is why? Is it an Anaheim problem, or is it a Zegras problem? And to be clear, there is a very large, innocuous middle ground here.
But I think there is some reason to think that it is, at least partially, a Zegras problem. And if it is, is it still an issue when he gets out of Anaheim

I think it's a Zegras and Verbeek problem.
They really seem to have an oil and water thing going on.

It is a zegras problem. At best if you pick him up you are getting a somewhat offensive 2nd line center who can be in the top 40-50 scorers for center men in the league who cannot play defence.

I’d be fine if the Flames bought low on Zegras

Jarome Iginla immediately came to mind. I'm sure we could find more if we wanted to delve into it but we would many. It's rare.

Too bad we don't have a Joe Nieuwendyke to trade for him.

Zegras has warts, but that team as a whole has major issues. Aside from the goalie, who is outperforming expectations, or even meeting them?

I always got the impression that Zegras has been a Hollywood pretty boy. It’s his prerogative to prioritize hockey or not but it really seems like he’s self absorbed in his image. Depending on the price I’d be willing to trade for his skill but he wouldn’t resign nor would he provide you franchise player determination. So realistically he’s worth a 1st and a bit based on that skill alone. But anything more than that is simply overpayment. And if that’s a mid or high first I’d just skip it.

Jumping to some pretty serious conclusions about a 23 year old man here.

I have a friend in common with Zegras. Apparently when there were rumours about coming to Montreal, he was stoked (a fair number of Americans seem to like playing on the Habs).
So I wouldn't assume there is a blanket Canada issue for him. At this point, he would probably be happy to be anywhere he is set up for success.

Who doesn’t like Montreal? As a mid 20s guy it’d be fun.

Apparently, according to David Littman of hockey trade rumours, Friedman made some comments to the effect that CBJ might be open to moving on from D David Jiricek. Seems he’s struggling this season a bit, and finding it hard to earn ice-time from HC Dean Evason- he’s been scratched several times, and when he does play, it’s only 11+ minutes per game. Compounding the problem is that Jiricek had difficulty last year with management, and the new GM (Waddell) might not value him as much as Kek did. DJ’s agent is Allan Walsh btw.
I know we have a glut of D in the system, but this kid is a stud and a future star. Not sure what they would want, but I would back up the truck for this one.

I went back to 1990. Martin Rucinsky was traded within a year of being drafted in the 1st round.
So were:
Eric Fichaud
Bryan Berard and Wade Redden (same trade)
Maybe Robyn Regehr - not sure when the Flames selected him as the prospect in that deal but the original trade was in February after the draft.
Nolan Foote
Landon Wilson and Phillippe Paradis were technically traded after a year but in actuality on the day of the following draft.

I would do the NJ 1st, Poirier and Pelletier and consider that a steal.
With Jiricek on board and Bruz and Parekh in the system, that locks up the RD for the next decade, and puts a nail in any Andersson extention.
The Columbus roster is insane looking, so I don't know what they would want.
