Sure... But NBA players can become UFA's after 5 years. I can't think of anything else the league could go to the NHLPA with that wouldn't get laughed at beyond earlier free agency to get them to agree to that.

Selfishly, I don't want this to happen before McDiver leaves Edmonton. If McDiver is asking for $17M+ a year, there is no way he's going to give up $35M to sign somewhere else.

Would rather not. The Oilers need that more than the flames do. I know Huberdeau’s contract is not great but by the time the rebuild is over, it will hurt less… where as the oilers desperately need to buyout Nurse. Don’t want them to have a get out of jail free card on that.

Reducing contract lengths would reduce risk for owners on the backs of reducing security for players. Therefore, there would have to be some give from the owners to off-set what the players are giving up. Historically, that give has been reducing the UFA age, however, I don't see them going much lower than what they are at now. I also don't see the owners giving up any more of the HRR.

The PA would probably accept less term but it's gonna cost em a 7-10 percent increase on the ceiling AND floor of what players can earn per year

Should go to non-guaranteed contracts like the NFL has. You suck, you don't get paid. Seems fair to me.

Players have too much leverage in the NHL, never going to happen.

If that is the case, the PA would shut that down instantly.

Why? Same amount of money goes to players. The mediocre vets that seem to control the union aren't getting max length contracts anyways.

Just one buy-out in the CBA refresh, please. For the love of the hockey gods, give us a get out of jail free card.

Cap means nothing, its all about revenue percentage. And a ~5% increase would 100% never happen.

Maybe they will have a buyout period when they change the rule. Each team allowed one without cap implications?

That wouldnt matter to us whatsoever.
Whether you're talking about Huberdeau or Kadri, it makes zero difference to the Flames.
Huberdeau is keeping us above the Cap Floor and...its not like we're gunning for the Cup or anything.

We won't be able to compete until at least 2031-32 due to Huberdeau's terrible deal. Doesn't seem fair to fans like ours to have our team suck for so long carrying the worst contract in the NHL. Let's shorten the max term deals to three or four years.

They need a wage reduction clause for players that sign retirement contracts then start playing like they are already retired….

Stop hiring bozos like Tre, the problem solves itself.

If you draft well and add pieces around Huberdeau then being able to build a winning team with him on the roster shouldn't be an issue.
Dallas has been living with a combined $19M+ for Seguin and Benn and those guys have combined for like 110 points over the last couple years...so it's possible.

This hurts small market teams more than it helps. The Flames best chance of retaining a player through their prime is a 8 year deal after their entry level expires.
Be prepared to lose a lot of guys in their near prime to big markets if this happens (prob why it is being pushed to ensure stars don’t get locked up in Calgary and Winnipeg

Yeah pretty much... the solution is to stop hiring idiots, the solution is not to limit the damage that the idiot you hired can do so that he can keep drawing a paycheque and start doing different idiotic things. The problem isn't the length of contracts, the problem is the guy who incorrectly thought it was a good idea to offer it. If it's a bad idea just don't do it and if you're incapable of telling whether it's a bad idea or not... well maybe this job isn't what you're cut out for.
