Less than he wanted at the deadline sure.
Less than the Devil's offered at the deadline though? Not so sure.

If you want to know who won a trade, find the GM that isn't taking interviews on how he won the trade. That's a pretty safe starting point. You know, if you're not into comparables and logic and such.

Ya I'm sure most trades end up being for less than you wanted... thats how a negotiation works. Can't imagine trades just go I want "a top prospect and a 1st" and the other team instantly says Done

No evidence, no. And since we rarely get details of trades that were never completed, we’ll likely never known.
It stands to reason that Markstrom had more value to the Devils when he could push them into the playoffs than after the 2023-24 season was written off (3 playoffs > 2 playoffs). And by the offseason, with more goalies on the market, Conroy had to worry about the Devils going with a plan B option. The fact the Devils demanded and got salary retention in the summer, when it wasn’t a deal-breaker earlier, suggests the valuation and leverage shifted.

So the reports of salary retention being a deal breaker was wrong? He says he would have taken the full cap hit.
Fitzgerald is super annoying with his loud mouth. Just shut up and GM.

It suggests he lowered his ask, not that the offers lowered.

Or ...
The Devils in talking to Markstrom's agent got the feeling that they were the only option for the Flames and kept their bid low.
Calgary takes a pass on the March bid, heads into summer, and finally gets the deal done when they get Markstrom to add teams and the Devils up the bid.

Doesn't really mean the retention wasn't an issue on value. Fitz could have been offering Holtz + a 3rd for an unretained Markstrom.

I think the leverage shifted for sure, but I don't know if it changed the outcome. As you say, we will never know.
I don't believe that NJ ever put the 2024 1st on the table. I suspect the basics of the deal were largely the same - 2025 1st with some protection and a young player. I suspect NJD would have been more than happy to give up Holtz.
The element of retention is perhaps where Calgary had to give a little in the summer.
But I just don't see a scenario where NJD was offering something much better at the deadline because if they had - I think the deal would have been done.

If you believe everything else from that article then you have to believe that he wouldn't trade a top ten pick for a goalie. The hype around here just got people all bulled up that Mercer was coming back

Except in the case last season when Conroy traded with Allvin and ended up with Allvin giving up the below for Lindholm to play for the Canucks for 2.5 months!
1. Kuzmenko
2. Brzustewicz
3. Jurmo
4. 1st (Gridin, 28th overall))
5. 4th, which was turned into Misa (5th, 150th overall)
6. Jamieson (6th, 177th overall)

Markstrom is probably not going to have the season a lot of us would like him to have... and this is very much why Fitzgerald circled back:

And he was 10 minutes away from a shutout. I think he's going to have a big year.

I want him to have a great season. It wasn't his idea to leave Calgary.

Nice highlight save. I mean he's no Cooley or anything, and put himself half a mile out of position, but that was pretty nice.

Jersey will be hard pressed to make the playoffs with 1st shot Mark in net.
Worst goalie performance in Flames playoff history. Never forget.
