I read Friedman's statement: "Conroy has a plan and it is to turn over his team a little bit" implying it is what he wanted to do this off-season, not what has already happened. Nobody would say that last year was 'a little bit'. This off-season has been a little bit, more or less, than what the Flames finished the season off with.

Calgary isn't tanking. They remain competitive enough to lose 2-1 and 3-2 games and avoiding 10-0 losses, but this is a team that is designed to finish probably in the bottom 3, if not last overall.

The later, I've not heard nor confirmed that Weegar wants out/to be traded and that the mention of it caught me by surprise because the last I heard he wanted to be here in Calgary.

I'll predict a ranking by points:

Minnesota
Detroit
Utah
Philly
Seattle
Montreal
Anaheim
Calgary
Columbus
Washington
Chicago
San Jose

Yes, Flames could get some wins they shouldn't or have a goalie get hot for a bit, but same goes for all of these teams (except maybe SJ).

I think of the list Washington was the hardest to place, I think they're still bottom 12, but could be higher up.

It sounds like it’s the approach he’s taking to the veterans as well. Maybe they’re just thick, but from Friedman’s piece it sounds like Conroy has convinced them management are not tanking.

This is definitely true for some old school original posters (who have new handles and get mad when you call them on it!)

I am not sure I agree with that assessment.

Between Weegar-Andersson and Wolf and the younger defenders I think there's a high chance our back end is better than expected. I think we're extremely weak up front, so might still get caved in, but I'd feel better about a bottom 5 chance if we send out one of the dmen.

Sportsnet says Fowler may be on the block:

Quote:
The 32-year-old Fowler has two years remaining on his contract with the Ducks and has been a staple on their blueline since entering the league in 2010-11. Though Fowler has spent his entire career as a Duck, Friedman stresses that the ongoing discussions regarding his future in Anaheim are not negative and both the player and the team are working together on a resolution.
"They've got a lot of good, young players. Eventually, what you've got to start doing is you've got to say, 'Cam, we've got to start taking away some of your ice time so that the other players can learn what it's like to play in the important situations,'" he said. "(Fowler) knows that when they're good and really ready to contend, it's going to be their team, and not his team."
For his part, Fowler has tried to make the process as easy as possible for the Ducks, including expanding his once small trade list.

Not the worst contract either for a very dependable defenseman that can eat a lot of minutes. Anaheim could easily retain and get a very good return, similar situation to Andersson and the Flames

They would really be upping the stakes for first overall if they move Fowler out. Their D is not good.

Basically, Montreal only gets Florida's pick if Calgary finishes in the bottom ten. If the Flames finish, say, 11th from the bottom, Montreal will be selecting 11th overall.
The frightening scenario is the Panthers are riddled with injury and on such a hangover that their first falls inside the top 10 which would give the Flames their 2026 1st instead of 25 and then the Habs would get the Flames unless it was 1st overall. There is a doomsday scenario where the Flames have no picks in the 2025 1st round and gift second overall to Montreal but on the flip side they would have 4 unprotected 1sts in 2026 (Flames, Knights, Devils, Panthers). So unlikely though as the Devils and Panthers would have to have horrendous seasons.

The flames are the best team in the world at disappointment, so there's a higher probability than math and reason suggests that we get this outcome.

Seeing your former team win a cup could definitely change a persons mind. Especially if there are conversations between him and the brass about their 1-3-5yr vision and if that aligns with his.

It worked out well, since defencemen typically take longer to mature than forwards. Parekh might well break into the NHL the same year as the team's #1 pick in 2025, which would be a Good Thing.

Giordano's agent on 960 says he tried to sell Calgary on the idea of Giordano coming back and mentoring the kids and then getting traded to a contender at the deadline. Said Gio has interest in going to management after retiring as well and tried to sell the idea of both Jarome and Gio joining the management team with Conroy all former captains.

Conroy didn't seem interested according to the agent
