I dunno maybe I spend too much time thinking if what I am doing is inconvenient to someone else. I’ll inch up at an intersection so the person behind me turning right can squeeze by. I always move my cart out of the way if I am going to look at a product or something. My wife thinks I try too hard to not inconvenience people to the detriment of myself or family. But I just think if we all did this stuff life would be so much more stress free.

The worst are escalators. Where do they think people behind them are going to go if they stop after getting off the escalator?

This is one of the biggest things I try and teach my kids. If I can pass anything onto them it’s situational awareness of what is going on around you.

Watching people ditch their carts in the middle of an aisle in Costco is the sole reason I do not shop there. It’s maddening and not worth the “savings”.

Hah...my kid, who's learning to drive, asked me why I sometimes "drifted" to one side of the lane approaching intersections. I'm not drifting, guy, I'm making room for people to get by me! He was blown away that I could pay attention to that kind of thing.

We need to model the Japanese in that regard.

They might be a little too considerate on average by our standards, but it's better to start there and scale back than try to explain the importance of situational awareness to a young person that sees every one else as inconsequential NPCs.

That's not to paint them all with the same brush, there are good apples too. But social media is steering society more and more and it's not exactly pushing selfless principles.

Absolutely it’s irritating. Along the same lines are the shopping centres with only one left turn to exit the parking lot area. I can only assume someone like Timun would come up with that ignorant of a design.

There’s one shopping centre parking lot southwest of Mt Royal that is the worst to exit in the city.

Racism is absolutely an aspect of it for some people, I've heard it referred to as 'browntown' many times. But there are other parts to it as well. I am also someone that loves to crap on the NE mostly just for fun, and race has nothing to do with it.

For me it's not even that the NE is bad per se, just that every other quadrant is better

There’s for sure a racist element to it, but 2 parts of it that aren’t is that lots of the communities are older and definitely more run down. Maybe it’s subconscious but I tend to see more poorly kept yards and home exteriors in the NE than any other quadrant.

Second thing would be proximity to the airport, I would want to live as far away from any flight paths as possible.

This feels a bit like deflection. vast swaths of the NW and SE are also in the flight path.

It reminds me of the use the the F and R words as a kid. With maturity and reflection we realized those could be pretty hurtful to certain people and we stopped.

There are a lot of new drivers in the NE that can make driving frustrating, but I'll take that over the self-important drivers in rich whiteyville over on the West side. Escalade drivers think they own you as well as the road.

That discussion may continue but my reasoning wasn’t the people that frequent the NE. It was the road network.

I think there is a bit of a racial element to it. It goes back a long way. I remember as a kid back in 1979 when we were moving out to the Properties and was asked by a friend’s Dad why we wanted to move out to live with a bunch of Pakistanis.

He did not say ‘Pakistanis’.

Reading the above posts brought that memory that I haven’t recalled in decades brought it back to me like it was months ago.
