I’m wondering if Kylington’s camp looked at it as they think they can get a one year deal from a few teams but wanted to test free agency to see if they could get something longer. Figuring they could always fall back on signing a one year deal with someone if they end up with no offers for something longer. And that may still be true. He may end up with a one year “show me” deal on another team.

Let's be clear though, Millennials are within the age grouping of 28 - 43 years old, so yes they are as old as stated, but most are not.

Agents have to lose context after a while too you have to figure.
I mean, JP Barry is making somewhere around 20M on the active contracts he has signed (not counting what he has made in the past). That's more than a large percentage of his clients will make in their career.
Easy for him to advise not signing a fair deal and pushing for more, yet, a hell of a gamble for the client.

I have a sneaking suspicion you are correct on both counts.
I think his Agent screwed this badly, much as I believe the Johnny situation was a miscalculation by the agent, amongst other things.
And I also believe he stays in Calgary. Although, to be clear, thats not based on any information, its just a thought.

We just don't know.
An experienced agent would point out the issues with turning down the Flames offer. I don't see it as the agent leaning on the player and saying "don't sign the Flames offer, we'll do better tomorrow"
I see it more likely that Kylington may want to avoid the stress of doing this again next summer, asked his agent for the odds they could do better, was told the agent's view and decided to take that chance.

He had a really good run with Chris Tanev as a defensive partner (Tanev improves everyone), but he's never been all that dependable on his own and can't anchor a pairing.

I don't understand this take. He had one really good season and then was gone for a year and a half. And then came back and struggled.
It's super unclear how good he is because of all that time off. Id be excited to see how he progresses if he comes back. He's not even close to fully baked as a player.

There are unlikely to be teams that think MORE of Kylington than we do. So this all feels weird.

That’d be my guess. I think it makes perfect sense to want a year where you don’t have to think about anything but hockey.
Every year over the last five has been either a contract year, a year where he missed a ton of time on IR or both. That’s a lot of stress. I know people want to talk tough about how he should just be grateful for whatever the Flames offer, but if I’m the player, I’m absolutely looking around for a situation where I can have at least one entire season where I can put everything that isn’t the actual hockey part of hockey aside and just focus on playing the game and getting back to where I want to be.

Why though? Are you saying this because of the recent signings or the fact that he went to market and didn’t sign prior to July 1?

It would be pretty odd if an agent thought that this was a smart path to take given his recent history a reluctance for other teams to jump into an unknown situation.
This should have been a slam dunk 1-year deal for both parties as it minimizes risk and also gives the player a chance to stay in a familiar environment and try to get back to a decent level of play.
He wasn't good last year when he came back and really didn't look anything like the guy that was playing with Tanev the year before and I don't think it's unfair to assume that that one season was a blip and the player is basically a 5/6 at best. I'm rooting for him, but I just haven't seen enough either before the absence or after to think the opposite.

I don't think anything in my post was earth shattering wrong or out of line. We know the hold up is term and I highly doubt the Flames are offering a 5 year deal and Oliver's camp coming in strong with the 8 year demand.
Odds are they are offering a 1 year show me deal at similar money to this past year. Show us you are past your personal health issues and can play for the season.
Understandably the players side wants more term and money and is working their side. On the Barn Burner Podcast the other day, the sentiment was similar to my thought. "If you don't want to be here after everything the team has done, the ****off"
As for the Flames sentiment about buyouts and avoiding paying people who don't work for them as much as possible, there is ample evidence to that. Calgary isn't a team with a ton of retention dollars, buyouts and more. Anybody who has worked for a Murray Edwards company in Alberta knows his line of thinking.
The Carolina Hurricanes owner is known for spending dollars on players without a concern, management and other roles? Not really and doesn't spend the money there. That's why his GM was making a rumored $500k a year when some GM's in the league make $5 mil +

No one ever 'gets past' mental health issue. You learn to live with and manage it. But you're never 'cured' or 'past' it.
Also Rhett's sentiment was very...well..Rhett...and locked in a certain brand of archaic mental health thinking.

Point taken 100%. That doesn't mean Flames ownership would be willing to sign a long term deal with him until he can show he can play a longer term season. Nobody is throwing multi million dollars anybody's way just because.
I am dealing with this kinda stuff with a friend of mine who is going through some mental health challenges. Difficulty in landing a new gig as the runway for their existing career is short. When applying for similar roles in the same field, I don't think the fact that he has been on disability for a few years is exactly helping his cause. When hiring managers are reaching out for references, what is the likelihood his current manager is saying to hire him, he is the best guy for the job??

The Flames fired Sutter a year after signing a three year extension and he was not a cheap hire in the first place.

Two years of guaranteed money could be life changing for Kylington at this point depending on his circumstances. Maybe he's not at a point where he's willing to bet on himself with a one year contract.
I think that it's totally possible he deeply appreciates the Flames and wants to be here, but feels his hand is forced looking out for his future and financial wellbeing.
