Cost of living and Inflation increase. Let's call it that.
When it comes down to it I don't think Conroy is going to be a big free agent negotiator.
Seems like he's got the plan, and if the term and dollars fit in that plan you're in, if not, buh bye

Valimaki just signed a 2x2
2x3 for OK seems high and like it or not there is a risk of him not showing up to work

On the one hand, I feel like the Flames should just Kylington what he wants since the Flames have practically unlimited cap space.
But like you said, it is nice to see Conroy take a hard stance. He'll need this poise for future UFA negotiations.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I don't think it's unfair to ask the player to take a 1 year show me deal. Playing half a season after a year and a half out isn't enough.

If all he was asking was for a 2nd year it blows my mind that they didn't give him that

I look at it this way: Kylington had an injury that limited him to 33 games and 8 points over the last 2 seasons. Thats risky and not grounds for a pay increase or much term. If I’m the Flames I’m wondering why not spend that money on more proven/dependable commodity if it has become contentious?
The whole situation is just odd as by all accounts the Flames have been extremely supportive and it’s hard to imagine a better support situation for him. I would expect that would have value to him.
Having said that, I won’t be losing any sleep if he signs elsewhere. I doubt his leaving will be much of a source of regret if he does move on from the Flames.

I'm not sure why the flames wouldn't want a longer term as they enter a rebuild. What's the point of getting someone on a home town discount when the team is far below the cap. The difference between $2.5m and $3m also doesn't matter in that context.
Better to sign him to term and hope he outperforms the contact.
Weird decision by the flames imo

If Kylington was the exact same player, coming off the exact same situation, but had played for a different organization, and the Flames were rumoured to be interested in him on July 1, I wonder how we’d feel about a multi year deal for him? I think the lens on this player would be very different.

Maybe they think there is a good chance he signs but doesn't report again.

I think the raise is what most would object to

Fair enough. I wonder if we’d even be anxious to add him to the roster at all. And at this point, he’s just like adding a UFA, so that’s the lens we should be taking to it.

Most players get a raise when they hit UFA and multiple teams can bid for you.

Committing 6+ million to a player who may not be able to continue playing any day is a big risk .
And insuring the contract would be extremely expensive this time around

He’s no-more at risk of it than any other player.

If UFAs are signing in Utah, I never want to hear people saying Calgary is not a good destination.

Why would they? He was out for a year and a half getting paid. Rightfully paid but which owner is going to look at that situation and open up his wallet book with such uncertainty?
We see it all the time with physical Injuries where players have to prove they can still play. Well, Kylington has to prove he's over whatever demons he was facing.
It's a business after all and nobody just likes writing cheques they don't have to. Kylington imo needs to prove he is better on a one year deal. I don't see any team giving him longer than one year.

No idea what number he's asking for, but if it's 3 or less, I don't think that's crazy. I understand that he was out for the majority of his last contract, so didn't get a chance to show he's improved, but I do see his side of it and asking for a slight raise simply because it's a new contract. 2 years instead of 1 also makes a ton of sense for him. As for the Flames, a bit surprised they don't want to go for more than a year given their current state, but maybe for the organization, their current state doesn't matter, which is understandable.

My guess is that Murray is involved in these talks and he's not taking kindly to the idea of a raise. It seems like a harmless contract, but I could see how it may not be interpreted that way by the owner.
