This is good and we still have the 2024 draft to add further.
If he can parlay Hanifin and Markstrom into bettering the forward depth in a similar fashion, this will be a very good outcome. Not every move is going to be sexy, but I'd rather amass some picks along with players like Sharangovich, Hunter and Grushnikov that are ready to start moving along, versus draft our own prospects with late firsts or worse picks that may be 3-4 years away, if at all.
|
I like that Conroy has been bold, Some of the players wanting out did the Flames a favor, and forced Conroy to be much more involved in the process. This is going to help him be a much better GM. He even said, he talks to the prospects before he sends them down telling them what he needs to see before they come back up. He is not looking for players available on the market, he's looking for core players that are in it for the long term.

I like this trade; about as good as it was going to get. Maybe that 2nd rounder turns into a superstar for us, that's the hope - our draft capital is huge as is. Also, people forget that Tanev 'not going to Edmonton or Toronto' is also additional value going to us in this deal, so embrace that warm and fuzzy feeling.

That said teams like Dallas have been able to draft blue chip players with later 1s round and 2nd round. Maybe they are the exception but if a team isn't going to commit to a proper rebuild, then their scouting needs to be amongst the tops in the league and I'm not sure the Flames are there.

The Athletic article that weighted draft success by available draft capital had the Flames in the top 5 for draft success.

Identify the roles that you can rarely get in a trade or free agency (i.e. 1st line centre) and draft/trade for prospects who have a chance to fill that role whenever you can get it.

Carolina/Toronto HAS 15 Johnny Gaudreau's, and yet they can't make it anywhere in the playoffs.
Chris Tanev's don't just grow on trees. And you need a Chris Tanev to win a cup.

Only 2 teams have drafted 3 stars outside of the first round since 2010 according to hockeyprospecting.com.

I'd say that any of us who believe that this Flames organization needs to be built from the ground up through the draft should be happy with the return. It's future-oriented, and gives Conroy the ability to do exactly what is needed for this market.
Draft. Develop. Prosper.
There are no shortcuts to success in the NHL (...unless you're one of the top-5 markets in the league). Drafting and developing your own players is the hard work required to build a contender.

I am glad the Flames are creating a competitive stable of young D prospects.
All the prospects listed below are 23 or younger.
Grushnikov
Brzustewicz
Kuznetsov
Solovyov
Poirier
Morin
Jurmo
Hurtig

why were the flames not interested in retaining cap space and getting the 4th round pick for the 2023-24 cap space? They are looking at 7M deadline cap space or more. Cap friendly shows them retaining tanev's 2.25. There is only 212K potential in bonuses
Are the Flames looking to take on cap space at the deadline? Maybe part of the Petterson trade? Or will they eat the space to make Hanifin/Markstrom more doable? taking back a bad contract as well a retain cap?
|
Huh?
They retained as much as they could.

Even that is a guess.
We don't know if Murray changed his philosophy or if he had specifics on retention for UFAs on expiring deals, to which Treliving hasn't trade one in some time.

Yeah, must mean both teams drafted 3. Rasmus is the only other guy I can think of but not sure I’d call him a star.

But if they're calling him a star, I can't believe other teams haven't drafted 3 players like that in last 14 drafts.

Yeah, Rasmus is the one one that popped out for me. Probably it is him if you would consider the three for Dallas being Robertson, Hintz and Klingberg or Lindell.

Maybe we are underselling Andersson because pulling a top pairing RD in the second round probably isn’t common.
3 players like him outside of the 1st round is the qualifier.

Dallas got the best player so of course its a slam dunk A+ for their playoff push.
Nothing is going to push this trade in the flames favor sadly, the prospect is underwhelming across the board so its going to look bad for the flames. Just hope that he can amount to something positive in the next few years, its early so no sense in judgement at this point.

I think you have lost sight of the fact that Tanev is a 34 year old UFA who has no intention of re signing with the Flames.
This next bit isn't directed at you necessarily, but in general, folks are too concerned with "winning trades" it isn't all about winning the trade, it is sometimes about prudent asset management and getting a fair deal for players.

Or with every intention of re-signing with the Flames
