... but we'd be getting Matthew Poitras as part of it. That is a acceptable return IMO.

No chance tanev would only be traded for a second, let alone to the leafs. There are 5+ teams offering a second round pick, why would Flames help the leafs

I think we should expect a very similar deal in terms of value for Hanifin that we received for Lindholm.
Is that enough, who know but Poitras looks to be solid and is still a teenager who is playing regular minutes in the NHL.

From what I have watched, I think Poitras is a bit overrated personally. I trust the scouting staff though so if they see that as the best trade option, then go for it.

The Toronto stuff kills me. If they aren't willing to pony up their first for Tanev, I would look elsewhere. Don't even consider doing a favour for Brad.
|
It’s funny because if the leafs want him so bad they will have to pay for him. The flames could likely get a 2nd round pick from virtually any playoff team in exchange for tanev right now. You have to offer something better than anyone else in order to get him. Going out and trading your 1st so that you can get a 2nd round pick would be short sighted if Tanev is who they really want.
Another team could say they’re willing to pay a first round pick and all of a sudden the leafs only have a 2nd round pick to offer so they are instantly out of the running and ended up with Dumba instead of Tanev.

Off topic, but I am so very happy about what Harris has done in Washington so far as a lifelong fan. i do wonder how much time he devotes to the 76ers and Devils in addition to Washington...

Honestly, why not give Calgary the first? It's probably still a palatable deal for the Coyotes to get a 2nd instead of getting a 1st and having to give up a second.
The same assets could be moved for the same result, making more sense for everyone.

Poitras really doesn't move the needle for me as the SOLE core piece in a Hanifin deal honestly.
Poitras and a 1st would have be the start...
He had a hot start with a hot team but since the WJHC break he's been pretty pedestrian. As one of the NHL loans for the world juniors he should have dominated and honestly looked a step behind the entire time.
Perhaps I'm just not that high on him personally, however I feel the guy tops out as a 3rd liner at best.

Well sure... but the overrating tends to be along the line of "The next Bergeron!" level of overrating which is more then anyone should project on a rookie.
Setting that aside he is a 19 year old Center playing meaningful minutes, with a reputation for solid two-way play, making a positive contribution on a contending team in the NHL right now. That is a big get IMO.
As for the other musing I wouldn't take the TO offer... if there are 5+ teams willing to offer a 2nd now by the time the deadline comes one will offer a 1st or a 2nd ++.
I dunno about the Pinto proposal... the price is fine but the timing isn't ideal.

Poitras also just had season ending shoulder surgery.
I'm always afraid of those types of injuries becoming a reoccurring issue.

In regards to the Hanifin to Boston rumors: I think people put way too much emphasis on the home town angle. Tkachuk was supposed to go to St. Louis, Gaudreau was supposed to go to Philly. These things rarely work out that way.

I'm going to take a wild stab and say that Hanifin gets traded to Boston today.
It is too quite. All the posturing is over.

Poitras seems like he is overhyped because the Bruins rushed him to the NHL, because they needed players on ELC due to being up against the cap. Same thing in Toronto with Minten, just because he played 4 games with the Leafs he is now a top prospect?

Seravalli needs to go back to writing blogs or whatever he was doing before getting all this air time.

While we're piling on Frank I thought it was funny to hear a Pittsburgh reporter bring him up on the Fan Pre Game Show last night on Sportsnet. Basically Frank suggested Dubas wasn't under any pressure in Pittsburgh as it was only his first year whereas the reporter argued that as Crosby & company get older the pressure put on Dubas by the ownership group would be greater.
Long story short, other markets think he's a moron at times too.

Flames amateur scouts would have their own book though. I agree on eye test from the WJC though!

Sure it would be a good move by them, but it's a pipe dream.
They aren't getting Dumba by trading the 20-24th pick for the 38-40th pick.
And they aren't getting Tanev for the 38-40th pick.

Yeah for me the Ottawa trade is too good to be true for the flames if it's the Nucks pick, but the other two are the other way around for the acquiring teams. Even if Hanifin is a rental he should bring back a reasonably good 1st rounder and change if Tanev is worth a late 1st/early second and Lindholm was worth a 1st ++.
Also, Treliving should take a hike... I'd rather see the flames ship Tanev somewhere else if they're going to settle for a 2nd rather than help make the leafs decent. At least it's not a trade to the Oilers anyway.

Yes he is, and there will be a spot and cap space for him in 2027.
This is our own manifest destiny, so lean into it!
