It's none of them. It's hero and future mentor of Dustin Wolf, J.Quick.

Luke Hughes, Mercer, Holtz and Bahl would all be on new deals. Then Nemec the year after.
That's going to get tight really fast.

Quick actually might make the most sense in the sense that he's Wolf's idol I think...
But also not sure why the Rangers would be considering trading him to a rival in their own division that they may have to play in round 1.

Thats fair. Given the Flames likely are ok with a bottom 10 finish next season, it seems like a great time to give Wolf half the starts and let him learn on the job. So long as its a 1A/1B and not like what we have now.

I think next year it would actually ideally be more of a 50 Games Starter / 30 Games Wolf scenario.
AHL to NHL is a big jump and Wolf will need some protection...look at how well throwing Levi to the wolves worked for Buffalo this year.
Doesn't mean you don't trade Markstrom...but you do want a guy that you think can play 50-60 games if required.

I don't see the Flames purposely tanking by playing a bad goalie. I also don't think it's in Wolf's best interest to run him out if he's struggling. Even half the starts, Wolf would have to earn/show he's ready for.
The ideal is obviously for the Flames to tank for a couple years, load up on picks and then have Wolf emerge as a true starter. Things may not work out that perfectly.

I disagree. There was quite a contingent of posters here that wanted to trade Markstrom after that playoff series particularly. One, to get more money to spend on Tkachuk/ gaudreau, and two, because there was a lot of discomfort over his performance against Edmonton.

I figured we would have to take Vanecek back in any deal involving Markstrom and NJD.
Maybe they will buy him out or bury him since he might not be the best to tandem with Wolf. A more steady veteran that can mentor would likely be best.

I hope some crazy non playoff team, or bubble that gets busted team, gives us a haul for him and he misses playoff hockey and eats popcorn in the off season.
And by popcorn I mean the moving kind, the stuff you pack your junk with.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm sure he's heard something. But if it's based on a bad game of telephone? Who knows.
I'm sure he heard something and that's why he named the specific team.

The thing with Frank to me is I don't think his sources are organizations, it's generally agents.
And I think agents feed him info that is sometimes right, but is also mostly trying to deliver an outcome.
So to me when I hear "Hanifin is interested in Tampa Bay"...to me there is actually a different angle going on there.
Boston and Florida (the two places I think are Hanifin's other preferred destinations) are division rivals with Tampa.
So if you want your preferred destination to step up...do you want Frank Seravailli saying publically "Boston is Hanifin's preferred destination" or do you have him say "Tampa Bay is Hanifin's preferred destination"
It's the latter because you're trying to create some fear that Boston/Florida have to step up so a division rival doesn't.

I won't share any more details other than the actual trade proposals because the article is behind a paywall, but here are the trade proposals:
Tanev (50% retained) to Dallas for 2024 2nd, Ty Dellandrea, 2026 4th; and
Markstrom (25% retained) to New Jersey for 2025 2nd + Alexander Holtz.
My opinions:
The return for Tanev feels pretty underwhelming. Dellandrea looks like a bottom-6 center to me. He's 23. Maybe there's a little bit of upside there? Maybe? The 2nd and the 4th are also long shots. So, I could see this return going nowhere, although who knows with draft picks? Maybe the Flames make a great pick. But that's a lot of maybes.
The return for Markstrom also feels underwhelming, but I'm willing to acknowledge my expectations might be too high. Holtz feels like a good get. He's currently playing on the Devils 4th line. So, I would be excited to see if more opportunity could cause the 2020 7th overall pick to explode. Also, RH RW, which is a rare commodity. It would be nice to have two young ones with potential, in Holtz and Coronato. However, I want a center! We already have a lot of prospects on the wings.
What are your opinions?
|
I could probably live with the Tanev deal if they wait until deadline day to get a 1st and it doesn't transpire (although I think it will) but the Markstrom trade is definitely a no go. Conroy won't move Markstrom unless that overpay is there because he doesn't have to and that isn't it.

I don't think they'd be purposely tanking. I think they'd be competitive, just not win a lot.

Getting Holtz feels like getting Sven Baertschi at the 2015 deadline. High draft pick pedigree that is an offensive first guy, has middling numbers at the NHL level and a team is just hoping he can come through in a different environment. Sven was traded in his D+4 year as well and he returned a 2nd round pick. Holtz might be slightly better than Sven was but not by much. There are 14 forwards taken in the first round in 2020 that have better numbers than him. I doubt Conroy bites on that package, it is pretty mediocre.

Because a couple of nobodies threw out a couple lowball offers for clicks on the Athletic? Lol, ok. Just like Lindholm wasn't getting much either huh?

Have you heard any new details on the Devils/Markstrom interest...feels a bit like it's stalled out again.
