That name was floated on a jersey site. I agree that he has more value than any pieces being discussed, but he is in a position of strength for their team.
Markstrom 2M retained and tanev straight up for nemec is a very strong move.

|
If Markstrom wins games and plays at a Venzina level of goalie then he could be getting paid Bobrovsky money ($10M) and still have value.
Especially to a team in Win-Now mode that has a roster built to win but their goaltender is blowing the season.

He is not being shopped and is coveted by multiple teams. He has very good value. You can choose not to believe that but you can believe whatever you like.

If Jack Campbell had zero value he could be traded for future considerations with no retention. That's zero value.

Well, the Devils can hang on to their young stars and future super stars and keep missing the playoff by a few points because their goalies are worse than crap. Then when their young stars and future superstars become reality and need to be paid, they'll just trade them and retool.

Only way Nemec is even a remote possibility would be if it was an extended Hanifin with a retained Markstrom. Devils can at least sell that Hanifin is what Nemec projects to be (unless he hits his absolute high end potential - which is less likely statistically). Hanifin makes them better now for the next few years and Markstrom disputedly pushes them to a level that no UFAs would achieve next year.
Hanifin (extended)
Markstrom (2MM retained)
Vladar
For
Nemec
2nd rounder
3rd rounder
Lenni Hameenaho
Vanecek

You need someone to split with Wolf. That’s why Vladar is going the other way. Gives us a bit of experience while picking up the extra 1.2MM salary for next year.

Vladar can do that. Then go get some expiring UFA on a 1-year deal. Can even be Vladar.
With respect to Hanifin, find some team to give us what we got in the Lindholm deal.
If Mercer and a 1st is what New Jersey really thinks Markstrom is worth, I'm not going to squabble about a thing!

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have posted that. If they're really offering that deal I'd take it.
But Markstrom for Mercer and a 1st? Imagine what you could get for Hanifin in a separate deal.

Sorry, friend. Missed this comment. Do you think Markstrom at 2.5x$8.5M would be claimed on waivers or could be traded straight up for future considerations? I don't. That would be zero value.
If we have to retain or take their garbage contracts back or send picks out then it's negative value.

Not comparable.
Markstrom is signed for two more years, so a team that acquires him is not just looking for a single playoff run. Hanifin is UFA at the end of this season, and it's widely rumoured that he won't re-sign with any team but Boston.
Also, there are other good defencemen on the market. But there are hardly any starting goalies, and about four teams that urgently need one. It's reported that Conroy isn't even shopping Markstrom; the offers are coming to him.

What?? I know why he'd like Boston, but this is the first I've heard of him only signing in Boston, let alone "widely rumoured". Can you post some of these rumours? Are they from credible sources?

They've been repeated multiple times here on CP. I'm afraid I don't have time at the moment to wade through several hundred posts on the trade rumours thread, but that's the best place to look.

Well, maybe someone else can then? Cause I browse CP all time and all I recall is CP posters guessing that he'd like to go to Boston. I don't recall any, let alone "widely rumored" posts from credible sources that he'll only sign with Boston.
Like, I'm not even being snarky, I just can't recall what you're suggesting at all. Can you remember one or two instances and who reported, maybe?

I don't get it. Why would Hanifin publicly stated that he would only sign with Boston? That just limit how much he can get from Boston. He need a bidding war to drive the price high.

I found these 2 by SuperMatt18 suggesting he's heard some inside info:

Flames are in a bit of a weird spot with Hanifin.
There are teams are willing to pay close to the asking price for Hanifin but only if he will extend. The is issue is generally he only wants to extend in a couple places (Calgary, Boston, Florida, one other unknown place) and as of right now those teams aren't the teams with the best offer on the table.
Those teams are interested in the player but don't really want to step up to pay the price. Boston and Florida don't have their 2024 1sts, which the Flames don't love as they'd prefer the picks be sooner. And those teams also don't have deep prospect pools, and aren't willing to move top prospects they do have (Poitras, Lundell, Samoskevich).
Which has reopened the door to the Flames signing him since there is still interest from
both sides in him re-signing, or hoping a team would be willing to pay the premium without a contract being agreed upon at the time of the trade.

An eastern conference team isn't going to want to spend big assets on Hanifin as a rental only to see him walk to Boston or Florida in the offseason.
|
Those are the only mentions of Hanifin's preferences in where he'd sign I could find.

Hanifin himself hasn't publicly stated anything that I know of.

So is it just Suppermatt saying that he thinks it's only Calgary, Florida, Boston and maybe one other place that he'd for-go free agency to sign in? Can you try to remember anything? It's so weird to suddenly hear that it's widely reported that he would only sign in Boston when it isn't common knowledge at all on this board amongst posters.
Like, were any of them credible insiders? You'd think you could remember at least one instance if it was someone credible?
