Defense top 4: Anderson, Weegar, Kyllington***

2/4 spots filled with Kyllington being a huge question mark. Only high end prospect that may have been close has been injured all season (Poirier).

While the team is low on scoring, it's not low on top 6 Forwards, we need 1 star forward and 2 top 4 defence to move the needle towards winning.

Honestly this team just needs to start selling high at the deadline and buying low during the summer. It seams so obvious and the market is incredibly predictable.
How do you buy low in the summer. Are you referring to free agency? That’s never low.

I’d keep Hanifin to make things easier. Upgrading Lindholm would be where I would sink money.

I'd much rather a guy who is hungry for success, not happy to collect a fat paycheck and cruise to retirement.
Doesn’t look like he’s collecting paycheques to me. Looks more like carrying a team on his back most games.

This in hunt for a goalie, already have that quality of goalie.

Markstrom is a top-10 goalie this season (if not better).

A healthy Devils lineup with Markstrom playing well could easily be a contender over the next few years. A healthy Flames lineup with Markstrom playing well isn't in a playoff spot.

If the Flames can get a decent haul for Markstrom that not only brings back some assets to help build with but also likely takes them out of continuously drafting in that double digit range. Sounds like a win-win. It also lets the team see what they have in Vladar and Wolf.

Friedman on HNIC says he thinks Flames haven't approached Markstrom about trade and waiving NMC.

Flames have a high bar to approach Markstrom. Would need to be massive deal for Flames or somewhere they know Markstrom wants to go before they ask him to waive.

Friedman just now on HNIC...I'm paraphrasing...

Flames are not discussing rumors about Markstrom trade. They have not approached him yet about waiving his NMC and will not unless there is a huge deal on the table or there's a place that Markstrom would absolutely want to go.

Sounds like they are getting offers, but aren't taking it seriously just yet.

He said he believes they haven't asked Markstrom yet.

But there is 'ask' and there is discuss. There is no way they are wasting their time talking to teams about Markstrom unless they think there is a reasonable chance he would say yes

Actually, it is quite possible to buy low. First, after free agent frenzy, you can always find useful vets on low-cost deals. And secondly, teams that have cap trouble will sometimes trade good but expensive pieces for cheap.

This mostly applies when the league is capped out, and not when you expect the cap to raise by $4-5M in each of the next 4 years.

Merzlikins value is Jack Campbell, nobody is trading for that guy without dumping a bunch of bad money deals back.

Yeah they are both garbage but teams like to pick up cheap goalies and the Flames don’t look like the are giving away Markstrom

Okay, they would still have to fight to make the playoffs...it's not like he would be joining a first place team.

Same with the Leafs, they kinda suck

If not for gimmick points the Leafs would be fighting with the Sharks

I like that the Flames are basically saying if you want Markstrom blow us away with an offer and we will talk to him about it. Stay firm Conny.

I think at the end of the day there will be a team come with a big offer.

This is what Sec214 said...

I don't think this is incompatible with what Elliotte said tonight.

I think it makes sense if they haven't asked him to waive his NMC and won't do so unless someone blows their socks off, but they've also talked to him about his willingness to waive and what it would take for him to do so.

Very rare that you see blockbuster trade deadline deals involving goalies. Last one was 2014 for Ryan Miller (hard to believe that’s 10 years ago).

I hope I’m wrong but I’m skeptical.
