The more I look at the it the more I wonder if it actually might not be that crazy if the Flames retain around $2M to equalize the salary.
They signed Kyrou to that contract before last season, just like the Flames with Huberdeau.
Kyrou did produce close to a PPG last year....but he was a team worst -38, had terrible underlying stats (44.7% xGF), and was not good defensively at all.
Huberdeau has struggled offensively but in terms of total impact (offensive and defensive) he's actually probably hurting the team less than Kyrou was hurting the Blues.
In terms of 5v5 production the last two seasons Kyrou only had 12 more points.
And now the fan base has turned on him, his production has actually fallen off, and he's getting booed off the ice and tearing up about it.
Huberdeau ($2M retention) + ??? For Kyrou and I'm not sure that's actually that crazy.

If you think the Flames are going to rebuild I have had news for you. Unless you associate rebuild and retool as the same thing.
The retool will lead to a rebuild, don’t worry. This team is nowhere close to good enough for a retool. It is marginally better than the Ducks and Sharks right now before they sell their UFA pieces off.
I think you'd probably have to make it a bigger deal...IIRC there were some rumors that the Blues might have interest in Hanifin
Huberdeau ($2M retention)
Hanifin
For
Kyrou
Krug (or Faulk/Leddy/Parayko)
There were rumors that the Blues wanted to shed one of their older, expensive dmen in the offseason and couldn't find a taker / Krug didn't waive his NTC.
I'd be sad to no longer be getting a 1st for Hanifin but if you could shed Huberdeau that would be worth it.
1) The Kyrou situation in St.Louis becomes even more toxic (St Louis is run by old school hockey men, they aren't going to react well to Kyrou tearing up on the ice)
2) Other GMs need to do what NHL GMs always do and take no risk and not try to acquire Kyrou.
If those two things happen then maybe it opens up the Huberdeau for Kyrou swap, and yeah I think you'd need more value coming from Calgary still.

Wouldn’t retain on Huberdeau if Hanifin is getting swapped for a cap dump. Sounds like a plan otherwise tho.

I'd argue this does nothing to turn the page and help the team.
Just own Huberdeau for what he is right now. Hanifin is worth a 1st (if not more). Prioritize that. Build your own team, and deal with your own problems as you move forward.

Parayko is off to a poor start to the season again and if they are open to moving him then I think there is a deal that could work.
Huberdeau (30 yr old, 1993, 7 years remaining)
Hanifin (26 yr old, 1997, UFA)
$15.45M combined salary
For
Parayko (30 yr old, 1993, 6 years remaining)
Kyrou (25 yr old, 1998, 7 years remaining)
$14.62M combined salary
Similar total ages. Similar total salary. 1W 1D for 1W 1D.
Both teams don't want to fully rebuild. Both teams want a shake up and change of scenery. Both teams have guys the fan base has turned on (Huberdeau and Kyrou)
Honestly I think it's something that could work for both sides.

Honestly I disagree.
Getting rid of Huberdeau, and buying low on Kyrou would be absolutley worth more than the 1st you'd get for Hanifin. Even if you're eating Parayko too (IMO that just opens up moving Andersson in the offseason)
Kyrou was a guy most wanted in a Tkachuk package...he's struggled with his overall game since 2022 but he's young enough to still fit a window of a retool.

Yeah. I actually feel sad for the pieces of #### who probably think they’re just doing their job. They aren’t empathetic enough to read the the room, step back and leave it
Sad, really

Do you consider the post Iggy stretch a re-tool? I don’t and that is where this team is. Feasted even had the same little speech about how it isn’t a rebuild but focusing on younger players. They then traded players for futures. It was a few years late like this go around but they eventually went into it.
They are only going to get worse when they trade the UFAs even if they focus on some warm bodies instead of futures.

I still think it’s bonkers from the Blues perspective. Just because the fans are booing him doesn’t mean the GM wants to trade him. Even if they do I bet it doesn’t involve taking on the worst contract in the league.

Think the “ +” would have to be pretty significant. The 5 year age difference would be a huge factor. The last 3 years of hubbys contract was always going to be a write off. Add in that he’s not playing well for 2 years in a row . Sadly hubbys contract is looking like the worst contract in the nhl.
I would like Kyrou because he's arguably the fastest skater in the NHL.
But I also think Huberdeau has the worst contract in NHL, and barring trading away everything, the Flames are not getting rid of his contract any time soon.
