Well that was a lot of fun! Good to see BUF has turned the corner the past couple seasons. They are a fun team to watch. Might pick up some tickets when they visit Calgary next time. Still laughing at all the missed attempts on the empty net. Thought it would come back to bite us in the ass, but some great efforts at the end to hold on for the win.

So if you are on the get in and anything can happen boat than picking up these points are a positive. If you are in the this team is mediocre and not competing for anything boat (and yes I know these are very simplified groupings) than the lackluster performances have given you a lot to be concerned about.
The team has ground out points in games they haven't played well in, they have taken advantage of some bad teams and a terrible goalie tonight. That is good to get points to try and get a WC but long term playing this poorly doesn't seem like a likely way to have much success.

I am in the "this team has a completely new coaching staff, and are adjusting to new systems, and it will take around 20 games before we can clearly see what they are" camp. My hopeful expectation was that they could stick around .500 while everything gets settled, so I am pretty pleased about the start.

Going to take a bit for me to get used to #17 having some speed
Edit; And Gilbert's play on the Coleman goal...

Not only that, he is an upstanding guy who is prob smarter than 90% of the players outside the rink. I'd vote for him if he ran for Mayor or Premier! lol

Interesting to note that despite being the only one with a win, on Sportsnet this morning, Calgary was the only Canadian team that had zero pre- or post-game comments by players or coaches.

It’s also one of the only games that doesn’t have a highlight pack up on sportsnet app. Annoying.

TSN broke down the poundings Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto took. Missing was Winnipeg. No Flames.
Sharangovich fits well on that 4th line, I am not sure if it worth the promotion to another line or keep him on that line as it gives us another effective line that can provide offence.
If you bump him up its likely Dube gets bumped down and that could cause more issues as now 2 lines might not click.
I would run with him on the 4th line for the time being.
Its also refreshing to see star players get ice time when you look at the box score and not 13-14 minutes.
They have been given the green light to make plays in the offensive zone and these turnovers will happen. If we see a lack of effort when they turn it over and don't come back thats when it becomes concerning and I am not seeing that right now.
A lot to like from Huska and his staff so far and the team.

Another game I couldn't watch, but followed along on CP. Nice to see them win again (and Oilers lose again), read like Vladar struggled but watching the highlights today it wasn't as bad as I was expecting.

Good ice time distribution among the players. Huska seems like a very measured coach. Liking it so far

That goal was all Dube's hard work. Kind of bad when he takes a penalty for a casual cross check during a faceoff and no call on that play when he was crosschecked in the numbers close to the boards

Only caught the second half of the game. Flames were by far the better team in the third, deserved the win. Overall I thought the game was disjointed, felt like poor quality preseason hockey still. Despite their talent, Buffalo looked poor. Lots of perimeter shots.
The reviewed goal/no goal was the right call. Logically it was in, it had to be. But it wasn't conclusive on any angle. Still a really bad blunder by the Buffalo goalie. No idea where his head was on that. He's very lucky it didn't count, would've been remembered as a real howler.

I get it that last nights example was probably in, and there just wasn't an angle that showed anything conclusively, but really how often does that happen? 2 or 3 times a season league wide?....Maybe?

Don't they already have some sensors in the puck?

For a goal line measurement you need to have precise info on all of the edges of the puck and the edges of the goal line, through the air. So you don't just outfit a bunch of pucks and have a camera on them. You have to outfit every rink, make sure it's calibrated right, make sure its maintained, etc.

I think the more pragmatic approach would be to put a really small camera on the inside of the iron where the post meets the crossbar, but even then, equipment/body parts could still obfuscate the view.

I thought Cozens stood out as pretty dangerous all game. That contract looks like it's going to be a good one for the Sabres.

Sabres don't suck anymore. Calgary wasn't caught with their pants down, a refreshing change from years past.
Things are happening! Whoo!

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather the software gets something wrong, than having inconclusive evidence and going with the call on the ice. That call on the ice has a bias, a computer program shouldn't.
I think you can get precise info as long as you know where the center of the puck is, and its orientation. You can even automate the goal light/horn in case of a goal.
I understand that you have to outfit all rinks, but it seems like we're almost there already. As far as the calibration, I think it can be done with equipment embedded in the posts/crossbar instead of equipping the whole arena. We don't need to know the puck position at all times, only if it crosses an invisible 6' x 4' rectangle.

You can see Huska's vision and the x and o's coming together. Have to commend him on creating a Frankenstein 4th line that could actually be effective and produce.
Sutter would be happy to have a 4th line that gets crushed analytically as long as they're big and mean and never see a need to make an adjustment.
The new nhl seems to be about how you can get an edge further down the line up, rather than which team's top 6 can come out on top.
This is why Vegas has been mostly great since entering the league.
