One thing this league's media excels at, is looking at contracts that aren't very good as comparables rather than mistakes.

I think the point you're trying to make though is Horvat was UFA a season earlier, so this contract covers one year later than the Horvat contract does.

In terms of Lindholm making that comparable though then there is no way he's going to look at it that way.

Also over the last 5 seasons:

 Lindholm: 139 goals, 325 points, 369 GP
 Horvat: 137 goals, 275 points, 356 GP

72 points per 82 GP for Lindholm, 63 points per 82 GP for Horvat.

Lindholm probably would argue that 9 extra points per season is worth an extra $500k to $1M per season.
 |
Lindholm would also have an argument that he was underused/misused in Carlina or his stats would be even better, whereas Horvat was given lots of time and top end minutes off the bat. Horvat is pretty firmly a 2C whereas Lindholm is a 1C (albeit lower end as discussed).

I have no doubts that Lindholm is worth the money and the term, I just don't think it is a direction that the Flames should be moving in.

They said being offered around, as in it is actively happening and not from earlier in the summer. Was surprised to hear that and suggested they may be working off bad information. Response was it was from a conversation just before Labor Day. How fresh is your information? Still hopeful they get a deal done, but this made me a little worried. Flames need Lindholm more than any other player IMO.

The Flames want a #1C. Why would he sign for less than Horvat? I think it’s also easy for him to say he is worth 1.5 to 2 million more than Kadri as well
If the Flames don’t sign Lindholm then I can see them tossing a dumb contract to Schiefiele if he makes it to UFA

If Horvat isn't a comparable, PLD/Hertl/Hintz/Aho are all around the same production last year and make in the mid 8s.

Why would they start shopping him now right before camp starts unless he just called right after that interview he gave and said I won't sign.
From what everyone is saying is that they haven't negotiated much at all and will hammer it out when he is back.

The Flames only have 6 players under contract for more than two years ( counting this year as well):
Huberdeau, Kadri, Coleman, Weegar, Anderson and Markstrom.

Yet that is good for 39.2 Million of cap space.

I would take Lindholm over Kadri any day of the week, but right now it feels like the money for an aging center is already accounted for.

Without bothering to look, don't 6 players from almost every team account for that kind of cap hit?

Sure, but you would presume that on good teams those 6 players account for the list of biggest contributors.

Two players from the list are good value.
Andersson and Weegar.

The jury is sill out of Huberdeau.

Kadri and Coleman are over paid for what the bring to the table

Markstrom is looking like a future buyout unless big changes happen.

With Coleman not so sure he's over paid.

138th in salary for forwards and 209th for points per 60 at 5 on 5. That's 0.43 P60 vs the 138th guy at 0.52 P60, so a difference of 7 5 on 5 points in a full season.

Add in ability to play a shut down role against top opposition, kill penalties, and good in the room and I'm not sure there's a big deficit there.

Horvat's contract actually has an $8.5MM AAV, not 8.85.

Likely a typo in the tweet.

I think Coleman has been great value to date, but it's hard to argue his contract is future proof.

8x$9M for Lindholm is also only $500k more than the best value contract in the league, Leon Draisaitl.

It’s all in how you want to look at it.

Coleman brings value to the Flames, but that's not how I would evaluate a player being overpaid in a capped out league.

Would you be able to trade Coleman without retaining salary for FC this offseason? I don't think you could because of the length of his salary, his age, and his production.

The same way I'm pretty sure that if Coleman was a UFA this offseason he wouldn't get a $4.9M contract.

Time will certainly tell.

But with the cap going up, and his overall play not as exposed to erosion as a speedy scoring type it may hold up fine.
