Good pick. Ronni looks like a player.

I’m more optimistic on Morin though.

I know it’s hindsight, but plenty of people were clamoring for Hutson in 22 and Stankoven in 21.

Production models aren’t everything but according to Bader’s model here is the current likelihood for each player becoming a star and an NHL player:

Ronni: 1%, 13%
Stromgren: 1%, 24%
Hutson: 74%, 81%
Stankoven: 38%, 89%

Really wish this mgmt team would stop prioritizing size. You can buy and trade for size.
I am already on record stating that Bader's model is useless, but regardless as you said you are also using the benefit of hindsight here as well when evaluating these selections. For example - Stromgren and Stankoven had identical projections based on his model during their draft year (15% star probability/ 49% NHL player) so based on that alone you can't be upset with the pick.

I think that model could reduce a lot of the noise by taking size at a given age into account.

Hutson being 5'9" at 19 should reduce his rating a bit. Mackinnon being 6'" at 18 should have helped his. For example. But that would have also helped Lafreniere, and look how that is progressing...

I would normalize size similar to age for the given league. But reduce the effect at around 6' and possibly have an inverse effect above6'4". Basically enhance a rating if projected for NHL size, but if the kid is growing like a weed penalize the rating since that will affect development.

Is Hutson the next Adam Fox? Maybe. But Fox has two inches of height on him.

Coronato currently sits at 16% of becoming a star and 66% chance of becoming an NHL player.

Stankoven only played 6 games during his draft year due to covid so that entire season isn’t even calculated into Bader’s model.

Plenty of people knew how skilled he was.

Kylington was taken with pick #60 in 2015. Pick #53 in 2015 was Rasmus Andersson.

Yep, Kylington was the only one they found in a long time. A long, long, long time. Almost a quarter of a round.

Andersson was playing in the OHL.

Before Kylington I think the only player of note would be Markus Granlund taken in 2011. Before that probably Backlund I would think.

They 100% need to be prioritizing elite skillsets over higher floors (bottom 6 expected).

Not taking those two was a huge miss.

Hopefully this is corrected under new management. They sure seemed to nail their top 3 picks this past draft.

From the Flames Prospect Ranking, Round 9:

I really think people are sleeping on Ronni, and he actually had a pretty good year, capped off with an excellent playoffs in the U20 where he was the second-best player in the league en route to winning the championship. He was 16th in ppg for U-20 aged players in the Liiga (the top men's league), with 5 points in 20 games, and was 15th for ppg in the regular season in the U20.

Ronni is 6'2", athletic, and plays with a chip on his shoulder. To me, he could one day be another Backlund-type. I voted Stromgren this round, but that's because I'm flip-flopping a little between the 2 players, as i voted Ronni last round. I feel like Strom has a higher ceiling, but Ronni has a higher floor.

This point is worth expanding. Dallas scouts took flyers on stankoven and Wyatt Johnston despite not playing much because of Covid. Curious what their process is.

There is a lot behind the scenes we don’t know about as well. Conroy has alluded to a few things in interviews this summer.

They traded up to get the Kylington pick because Treliving felt he owed it to the scouts after trading 3 picks for Hamilton.

Kylington is a player so it worked out, but losing the picks to trade up meant they missed out on Kaprizov by 1 pick.

If Minnesota didn’t pick him, and he fell to them they look like geniuses.

Hindsight is 20/20 but there is more going on than what we see.

#13 Toppi Roni, C (Calgary Flames): I can’t say I’ve kept too close of an eye on Ronni, but he seemed really involved today at both ends. He brought speed, he backchecked hard and made some nice passes around the net. He didn’t get a point, but I thought he looked great.

Okay, but you still condescendingly got it wrong. And the original point is a valid one.
