Sorry I misread. This works for Honzek but I’m not sure about Bell since he turns 20 in Sept. I don’t know if there are any advantages of signing him this calendar year or next.

I sincerely love the optimism this time of year. The development camp thread is always a welcome change from some of gloomy discussion through the rest of the year. So many prospects have 'taken a step', 'come out of nowhere', or 'have a chance'.

Of course almost all of them won't make it, but wouldn't it be a nice gift from the hockey gods if like half a dozen of these guys broke out? A once in a franchise convergence of drafting luck that changes the course of the franchise forever.

A guy can dream...

You're probably mixing it up with the contract slide rules for late birthday players that the Flames took advantage of with Emile Poirier a decade ago.

When a player signs his first contract, his "signing age" is not his age on the day he signed the contract but his age on September 15 in that calendar year. This creates a small loophole for players whose birthdays are in the final three and a half months of the year.



If a player's signing age is 18, his contract can slide for 2 years if he doesn't play at least 10 games in the NHL. If a player's signing age is 19, his contract can slide for 1 year if he doesn't play at least 10 games in the NHL.

Also, if a CHL player's 20th birthday is before the end of a calendar year, he can play in the AHL in the season that starts in that calendar year and doesn't need to be sent back to his CHL team even if he's still only 19 at the start of the season.

This creates a situation where a player can be playing in the AHL while signed to an NHL contract, but it slides that season and the team gets 4 years of pro hockey out of a player's 3 year ELC.


However, for a player with a late birthday, that loophole only works if the player signed his contract as an 18 year-old. If a player's signing age is 19 but his birthday is after September 15, his contract won't slide. This is why Poirier was signed on December 31. He was able to play in the AHL as an 19/20 year-old while his contract slid. If he had signed a day later, it would have been a different calendar year and his contract wouldn't have slid when he played in the AHL.



For Bell, his situation is different because he's already in his 19/20 calendar year. If he signs, his contract will count regardless of where he plays this season and he is still eligible to play in the WHL. The Flames probably don't want to sign him unless they are sure he will make the Wranglers this fall rather than burning the first year of his ELC while he's playing in the WHL.


This will be interesting to watch for this year's draft class because Honzek and Lipinski both have late 2004 birthdays. If they sign before the end of the year, their contracts will be eligible to slide for 2 years, so they could play in the AHL in 2024-25 without burning the first year of their ELCs.

I was really impressed by the effort and compete from Pilling in the scrimmages. His WHL stats don’t paint a picture of a player to me, though.

Even with this in view, it is still such a welcome departure from the days when Eric Nystrom and Kris Chucko were the most exciting prospects at camp.

Apologies guys, the one day I really wanted to be there, the wife gave the kids the option of watching the flames play or Calaway park... needless to say after the youngest convinced my oldest (2 and 4) that rides are more fun he gave in.

So I missed the scrimmage completely and have nothing to provide.
Hoping Sandman or someone else was able to go and can shed some light on the game/score/who scored and overall how it went?

Boo-urns, but the kids had fun so I can't complain.

Actually, looking at it a different way.... The average NHL career is apparently 4.5 seasons. Divide 23 positions by 4.5 comes out to just over 5 new to the league players per team every year on average, at least for a cup of coffee. If we say for simplicity that players enter the league at D+3 years on average, then on average 5 of the current D+3 Flames prospects would skate at least one NHL game this season. Next year 5 of the current D+2 prospects would, etc. - meaning that on average 20 of the guys currently at camp (or in Belarus) will make a regular season NHL appearance.

That doesn't sound so bad after all, ignoring that my assumptions have been pulled from a dank place and the math here is done in crayon.

I'm sure we could go back to previous prospect lists and tally up how many played. Probably far fewer than average because of the Flames' previous approach to development.
