That is the concern I have because re-signing them is just chasing mediocrity.

I feel the only thing that will make you happy is to watch Rome burn. If the Flames are not reduced to ashes you will not be satisfied with the outcome. I don't think you even want them to recoup anything of value in trading away players, you just want them gone so the team will fail and be a laughing stock.

More evidence everyone is not trying to get out of Calgary...they all want the gravy train to continue but the Flames want to be more prudent about contracts for guys who haven't got it done

At least one team has inquired about Markstrom but they wanted retention +. your only have to get hot for 2 months and when Markstrom is on he can steal games… maybe next summer.
Conroy is meeting/met with Bubba this weekend.

Thanks Sec214!
How fast do deals come together? It worries me a bit that they are waiting on answers with no deals lined up (could miss out due to timing).

Considering I haven't said or implied any of that I guess the made up narrative in your head must be pretty powerful.
I have repeatedly said I want a full rebuild to maximize the return we will get back for pieces. I have said that them delaying move makes me concerned about the return they could get, that going for a re-tool could reduce the return we could get. So not sure how you get that I don't want anything of value.
The way to be a laughing stock is to continue down the path we are. People around the league are already laughing at Flames, continuing down the mediocrity route is the best way to ensure the team fails and is a laughing stock.
I have been very clear that I want a rebuild, you may not agree with that plan but no need to make up fake stories and fantasy fiction based on nothing I have ever said or indicated I want.

I would think that Conroy has deals lined up in case guys don’t re-sign. I’d be shocked if he waited until guys said no to re-signing to start negotiating trades

Then give him a one way deal.

To any of you with insider info. Is there a chance that trades have already been made involving significant draft picks? The NHL has not announced the trade until the draft to make it more interesting or would that never happen?

I think there are way too many hands that touch information that'd leak if there was an official trade made. The furthest I could see is two GMs have a deal on the table that will consummate if the player one teams wants isn't there so there is no last minute haggling that stops a trade.

The way that information is structured now, if a trade is logged with the NHL it becomes general knowledge almost immediately. Teams wouldn't sit on a trade, just in case something happens in the meantime to derail it. Teams will sit on a trade concerning draft picks if they are looking for a certain player in a certain position, so draft day won't be totally devoid of action!

This all makes a lot more sense then the players suddenly collectively hating the Flames.
The Flames locking these older players into a long term deal would be a disaster. They'll ask be on the major decline in 3 years, and the Flames are more certainly not in a 2-3 year championship window.
The Flames need cap flexibility and having Backlund locked in for 5-6 million for 4+ years, and into his late thirties, is not that. Backlund will be 35 by the time his current contract is over. What team is offering him term? That's not the way it works for players of his caliber. He is at the point in his career where he is getting 1-2 year contracts until he is done.

Both Gawdin and Froese received either a one-way contracts or guaranteed money even if they play in the AHL when they left the Flames organization. I think it is quite common for a player in Phillips position to get something similar. If they don't give that deal to Phillips, they will need to sign someone else, like Dryden Hunt who will get that deal as well.

It sure sounds like this is the same old same old, prioritize mediocrity rather than care about winning or doing what makes sense. If we end up going down the rebuild route we need it sounds like the Flames will do so kicking and screaming the whole time.

Disagree entirely. Seems like the club is starting to focus on asset value and protect development.
The team is potentially moving on from Backlund, changing from their typical country club mentally. The negotiations with Phillips are a positive sign. Much better than signing some journeyman veteran.
Teams are successful in the NHL now when they have a steady stream of cap controlled players, manage their assets, make quality trades, etc... With the new draft rules, the odds of drafting the next McDavid in the lottery are slim. You could finish last place 5 years in a row and still not end to with that. You can pull a Chicago and dip down for a #1 pick, but even they have set themselves up well to pull up quickly.

If a team is asking about Markstrom I think you make it happen. I’d rather go with growing pains with Wolf and Vladar and sell Vladar at the ‘24TDL/‘24 draft/‘25TDL.
No retention but be willing to take on a bad contract back, hopefully with a year or two less on it.
I do understand seeing if Markstrom can increase his value though, he played a lot better after his son was born.

Wasn’t it reported by someone that Markstrom wants to stay?

I disagree as well. From what we've heard it feels like they're setting boundaries and sticking to them. Not many teams do a full burn it down rebuild and Arizona is proof that doesn't always work. You don't want these kids getting railed on for two or three years solid and you need veterans for them to learn from.
I'm optimistic for the next couple of weeks and I'll reassess after that. While I'd obviously like Conroy to fleece a few teams, I'd ultimately be happy getting fair value for the players who would rather not sign and I wish them all well.
